Shift Requirements: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime and the potential to work up to 16 consecutive hours during peak needs. This position is on-call 24/7 for emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may require occasional overnight travel.
Special Requirements:
+ Must possess a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) upon hire
+ Must obtain and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required endorsements and applicable restrictions within five months of appointment
+ Must obtain a Class B Journeyman License within 12 months of hire to perform electrical work, in compliance with Iowa Code Chapter 103
+ Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and participate in the ongoing random drug and alcohol testing program, per Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (Parts 40 and 382)
+ Must complete a post-offer, pre-employment physical to verify ability to perform job duties
+ Must establish residency within 45 minutes (under normal driving conditions) of the assigned work location within five months of hire
+ Must be available to respond to emergencies as required
As an Electrician with the Iowa Department of Transportation, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and repairing electrical systems. Your responsibilities will include:
+ Repairing, installing, replacing, and maintaining highway lighting systems — including tower lights, streetlights, poles, mast arms, photo cells, control cabinets, and more.
+ Training field staff on safe and proper techniques for removing and resetting downed poles.
+ Troubleshooting and resolving lighting outages quickly and effectively.
+ Performing electrical work in DOT facilities such as garages, salt sheds, rest areas, and driver's license stations.
+ Responding to Iowa One Call locate requests for state-owned electrical utilities within 48 hours.
+ Collaborating with construction teams and contractors on lighting-related issues in active projects.
+ Operating snow equipment to remove snow, ice and frost from roadways

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
+ Three years of full-time work experience in skilled electrical work in the construction or repair of residential or commercial buildings.
+ Successful completion of a standard electrician program at an accredited trade school.
+ A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one semester of an approved trade school electrician program is equivalent to six months of full-time experience.
+ Successful completion of three years of an approved electrician apprenticeship program.
+ Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper which involved electrical duties.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Iowa Code Chapter 103.
Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
