    Description of Work Unit

    The Colorado State University Department of Athletics sponsors 16 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports and competes as a member of NCAA Division I ( FBS ). The University is a current member of the Mountain West Conference and future member of the Pac-12 Conference. The University is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, 65 miles north of Denver.     Position Summary

    The Director of Performance Nutrition Education is a 12-month position that includes an instructor role in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition ( FSHN ) in the area of sports nutrition. The position will also collaborate with the current Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition in the Department of Athletics for delivery of sports nutrition education to coaches and student-athletes and assist with clinical nutrition for Colorado State University’s intercollegiate athletics program.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, health/exercise science or nutrition-related field

    + Minimum of two years experience working with a sports nutrition program

    + Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist ( RDN ) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (www.cdrnet.org)

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    + Ability to communicate effectively with students, Health and Performance staff, coaches, and academic staff regarding nutrition, research, and on-going situations or scenarios

    + Expertise in current literature relating to sports nutrition for high-level or elite athletes

    + Understanding and knowledge of nutritional and herbal supplements to determine if permissible under NCAA regulations

    + Ability to work effectively with a diverse community of student-athletes and coaches

    + Knowledge of NCAA rules/regulations

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Sports nutrition program experience in intercollegiate/professional athletics or sports-related field

    + Graduate degree in Nutrition or Nutrition-related field or related work experience

    + Board Certified as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics ( CSSD )

    + Current CPR , AED and first aid certifications

    + Experience working with individuals with eating disorders

    + Demonstrated experience with various nutritional education programs and initiatives

    + Experience with teaching or providing educational workshops with students and coaches

    Essential Duties

    Job Duty CategoryNutritional Education (FSHN teaching responsibilities)

    Duty/Responsibility

    + Teach approximately 15 credits/year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in the FSHN Department

    + Assist the Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition in Athletics with an existing undergraduate practicum in sports nutrition

    + Provide nutritional education and outreach to CSU student-athletes including coordination of cooking classes, grocery store tours, social media and nutritional intervention

    + Monitor and determine effectiveness of existing programs and implementation of new programs

    + Demonstrate an ability to positively influence and motivate student-athletes

    + Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition practices for training, competition, exercise recovery, injury and illness prevention and recovery, hydration, and supplementation

    + Assist Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition in development of policy and procedures relative to nutritional education, weight and body composition management, use of dietary supplements, fueling for performance, injury and illness prevention and hydration

    + Design individualized nutrition plans based on individual needs/circumstances as directed by the Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition

    + Monitor and determine effectiveness of programs

    + Address nutritional challenges to performance with special attention to food allergies, bone mineral density concerns, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion or deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, and diabetes

    + Utilize body composition and nutritional measurements to educate and evaluate student-athletes on maintaining proper body composition consistent with good health and peak performance

    + Evaluate effectiveness of nutritional strategies toward meeting desired outcomes and maintains current and accurate documentation as it relates to student’s care current with medical privacy standards

    + Demonstrate an ability to positively influence and motivate student-athletes

    + Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition practices for training, competition, exercise recovery, injury and illness prevention and recovery, hydration, and supplementation

    + Serve as a member of performance nutrition team and work with coaches and the sports performance team to develop proper pre- and post-game meals, meals while traveling, training table meals and snacks

    + Collaborate with nutrition and dietetics personnel on campus and in the community

    + Collaborate with University dining hall staff to coordinate training table schedules and menu selections

    + Collaborate proactively with other members of the Health and Performance staff in the overall development and well-being of student-athletes including collaborating on wellbeing issues such as physical and mental health, nutrition, post-injury nutritional concerns, athletic performance, academic performance, etc.

    + Coordinate with team physicians and athletics department’s disordered eating task force to recognize, evaluate and provide early intervention of disordered eating

    + Coordinate nutritional care and maintain open, on-going communication with sport coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, sports medicine staff and team physicians

    + Assist Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition with Department’s fueling station, supplementation and hydration programs including evaluation, recommendation, purchasing, receiving and distribution of dietary/nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy consistent with NCAA regulations and athletic department policies and procedures

    + Assist with the development of programs for interns, volunteers and practicum students as funding permits

    + Establish and maintain productive channels of communication with head and assistant coaches

    + Oversee, students, interns and/or graduate assistants

    + Adhere to medical directives of the team physicians

    + Maintain an environment of mutual respect and civility in the fueling station that is conductive to a supportive, productive and healthy atmosphere for both male and female student-athletes

    + Ensure compliance with department, University, MW conference, and NCAA rules and regulations
