             Senior Smart Grid Solutions Engineer Location **Houston** Secondary Locations Job Code **19092** \# of openings **1** Senior Smart Grid Solutions Engineer At POWER Engineers-WSP we are seeking a Senior Smart Grid Solutions Engineer to lead the design and implementation of strategies integrating renewable energy resources with modern grid technologies. This position will join our Advanced Utility Solutions Division’s ADMS/Grid Modernization team, focusing on distributed energy resource (DER) integration, renewable forecasting, and grid optimization initiatives to enhance system reliability, flexibility, and decarbonization goals. The role will work closely with utilities, ISOs, and developers to enable scalable renewable deployment through effective system planning, advanced analytics, and smart grid integration. Location The selected individual may work remotely or from one of our POWER Engineers office locations. Roles and Responsibilities 1.** **Renewable Energy Strategy & Planning •** **Develop and implement renewable integration strategies, addressing capacity expansion, storage optimization, and grid flexibility. •** **Conduct technical and economic assessments of renewable and hybrid energy systems (solar, wind, battery storage, EV infrastructure). •** **Support clients in grid modernization planning, renewable portfolio integration, and transition roadmaps. •** **Evaluate regulatory frameworks, market incentives, and interconnection processes to guide renewable deployment strategies. 2.** **Grid Optimization & Operations •** **Analyze and optimize power system performance under high renewable penetration. •** **Support deployment of Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) and Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) to enhance visibility and control. •** **Perform scenario modeling and simulations for Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO), load balancing, and demand response. •** **Integrate renewable forecasts into operational models to improve dispatch efficiency and system resilience 3.** **Technical Advisory & System Integration •** **Provide expertise in IT/OT convergence, SCADA integration, and energy management platforms. •** **Lead technical assessments for DER interconnection, hosting capacity analysis, and renewable impact studies •** **Collaborate with vendors and utilities on control strategies, telemetry mapping, and interoperability standards (IEC 61850, DNP3, OPC-UA). •** **Guide clients on hybrid grid solutions combining traditional assets, renewables, and emerging technologies. 4.** **Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership •** **Act as a trusted advisor to clients, helping shape renewable transition strategies and technology investments. •** **Support project delivery teams and mentor junior consultants in renewable strategy and grid optimization practices. •** **Lead workshops and stakeholder sessions on renewable integration, resiliency planning, and decarbonization pathways. 5.** **Industry Development & Innovation •** **Participate in technical working groups, standards development, and thought leadership on clean energy transition and digital utility transformation. •** **Stay current on policy, market, and technology trends in renewable energy, storage, and smart grids. •** **Support business development, proposal preparation, and strategic partnerships in renewable and grid modernization markets. Required Education/Experience + Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, or a related technical discipline. + 8+ years of experience in renewable energy strategy, grid planning, or DER integration. + Proven expertise in system modeling, power flow studies, and renewable integration analysis. + Strong understanding of ADMS, DERMS, EMS, or related grid optimization tools. + Familiarity with interconnection standards, regulatory frameworks, and ISO/RTO operations. + Experience working with advanced analytics, forecasting, or grid simulation platforms. + Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications + Master’s degree in Power Systems, Energy Economics, or Business Administration (with energy focus). + Professional Engineer (PE), PMP, or NERC certification. + Experience with market operations, renewable policy advisory, or transmission planning + Hands-on experience with renewable forecasting tools, storage dispatch optimization, or DERMS platforms. + Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks and grid resiliency planning. Work Environment & Travel + This position may be remote or hybrid depending on location and project needs. + Travel up to 20% to client sites for assessments, stakeholder workshops, and strategy sessions. Base Salary Range: $150,000-$165,000 per year The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This means that no two candidates are alike.
