    **The** **_Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences_** **is the third largest clinical department within the** **_School of Medicine_** **with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff.** Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

     

    The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a** **_Temporary_** **Research Scientist/Engineer 3.

     

    The Pravetoni lab at the University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking a scientist to support development of vaccines and antibody-based therapeutics to counteract substance use disorders and overdoses. Our unique multidisciplinary research program integrates rational vaccine design, immunomodulators, formulation/delivery platforms, pre-clinical models, analysis of B and T cell lymphocyte repertoire, analysis of innate immunity in pre-clinical and clinical samples, GLP/GMP studies to support regulatory approval and clinical evaluation, and ad hoc industry collaborations. This position will support laboratory activities conducted in vitro and in vivo in a variety of models ranging from cell lines to pre-clinical studies in small and large animals. Our team is currently undertaking Phase I clinical trials of vaccines targeting various opioids, and we are planning additional Phase I clinical trials. Strategies and platforms are applied to development of vaccines or antibodies against biological or chemical threats (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, cancer, antibiotic bacterial infections).

    Responsibilities

    Research Operations and Procedures (70%).

     

    + Solve complex and varied problems related to ongoing research projects.

    + Independently perform experimental procedures including hybridoma campaigns, sequencing and cloning of antibody binding regions into suitable vectors for expression, handle cell lines and tissue culture, analysis of innate immunity in pre-clinical and clinical samples.

    + Perform immunological assays such as ELISA, Flow cytometry, aRT-PCR, cytokine multiplex screening.

    + Execute other experimental tools including sequencing of innate immune cells, B cells, and T cells, and analysis of such data.

    + Other research aims will involve testing of particles, adjuvants, and other vaccine components.

     

    Immunization and In Vivo Studies (15%).

     

    + Exclusively responsible for immunizing mice and rats and collecting tissue.

    + Assist with in vivo assays to test vaccine and mAb efficacy against target.

     

    Research Support and Documentation (15%).

     

    + Support PI and other staff in power points, posters, peer-review publications, and patents.

    Minimum Requirements

    + Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

    Additional Requirements

    + Relevant experience directly conducting research activities, including analysis of innate and adaptive immunity in samples derived from cell culture, human samples (e.g., whole blood), animal samples (e.g., spleen).

    + Experience in use of multi parameter flow cytometry, ELIspot, ELISA, sequencing workflows, cytokine multiplex assays, qRT-PCR.

    + Experience in formulation and characterization of adjuvants, particles, delivery systems via biophysical and biological assays.

    Desired Qualifications

    + Knowledge of innate immunity and analysis of dendritic cells and macrophages in vitro and in vivo is strongly preferred.

    + PhD degree in Pharmacology, Immunology, Biomedical Engineering, or related biomedical fields.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $72,288.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $132,612.00 annual
