Summary The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies (ASD(CT)) is the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense, Deputy Secretary of Defense, and Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (USD(R&E)) for the designated critical technologies for which the ASD(CT) has been assigned primary DoD cognizance by USD(R&E) in support of the National Defense Strategy. Responsibilities Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Serve as the principal advisor and report to the senior official, the Principal Director (PD) for Directed Energy (DE). This position is responsible for providing management oversight, policy guidance, and coordination for the Joint Directed Energy Transition Office (JDETO). Serve as the technical and oversight lead for all Science and Technology (S&T) matters related to DE weapon systems. Allocation of resources and the alignment of S&T efforts across the department to ensure consistency with the PD for DE direction regarding the S&T strategic message, portfolio strategy, and policy development. Establish a DoD-wide, technology-driven, mission-focused approach for DE Science and Technology (S&T), addressing warfighting capability gaps while promoting synergy of effort to ensure technical dominance against any adversary. Serve as a technical expert in DE technology areas to facilitate research collaboration aimed at advancing and enabling DE technologies. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicant must have directly applicable experience that demonstrates the possession of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. Such experience is typically in or directly related to the work of the position to be filled. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the requirements described below. Basic Requirement Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. or Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You may qualify at the NH-04 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the NH-03 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector). Specialized experience is defined as: experience assisting with collaborative technical studies, utilizing planning, programming, budgeting, and execution (PPBE) process skills for resource allocation, and managing science and technology programs across a variety of organizational areas. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
