What a Development Engineer contributes to Cardinal Health
Our Engineering team provides solutions to optimize manufacturing and dispensing processes. This includes design and innovation of dispensing processes for new drug products as well as continuous improvement of current production methods and equipment.
Cardinal Health’s Nuclear & Precision Health Solutions business manufactures and delivers radiopharmaceuticals and related medications to healthcare providers in compliance with stringent state and federal regulations.
Job Summary
As a Development Engineer, you will play a hands-on role supporting the design, testing, and improvement of systems that produce and distribute radiopharmaceuticals across the U.S.
The Development Engineer is responsible for specific tasks and overall objectives to meet and exceed team and personal goals while managing multiple projects under general guidance. This role also conceptualizes project paths quickly and accurately, is a problem solver, and addresses challenges strategically and efficiently
Responsibilities
Working under the mentorship of senior engineers, you will contribute to equipment design, process optimization, and system reliability projects across multiple production facilities. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply both electrical and mechanical engineering principles in a regulated, safety-focused environment that directly impacts patient care. May include other duties as assigned
_1. Equipment & System Design Support_
+ Assists in the design, modification, and documentation of custom systems used in PET (Positron Emission Tomography) radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing.
+ Supports engineering design activities across electrical, mechanical, and control domains.
+ Develops detailed 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) models, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation.
+ Contributes to PCB (Print Circuit Board) design, wiring schematics, and component selection under the guidance of senior engineers.
+ Participates in prototype fabrication and testing, using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining and additive manufacturing tools as needed.
+ Supports system verification and validation activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and operational standards.
_2. Process Engineering & Optimization_
+ Supports process improvement initiatives focused on reliability, repeatability, and operational safety.
+ Collects and analyzes performance data to identify opportunities for process optimization.
+ Assists in conducting root cause analyses and implementing corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
+ Collaborates with cross-functional teams - including Quality, Operations, and Safety - to implement design and procedural improvements.
+ Learns to apply Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in engineering design and documentation.
_3. System Integration & Maintenance_
+ Provides technical support for cyclotron facilities and control systems, including troubleshooting and maintenance activities.
+ Learns to work with control system components such as PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), sensors, and RF (radio frequency systems.
+ Assists in system upgrades or retrofits to improve performance and extend equipment life.
+ Helps document system configurations, software versions, and equipment modifications _._
_4. Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance_
+ Follows established radiation safety (ALARA) practices and comply with all NRC, FDA, DOT, and OSHA regulations.
+ Supports the preparation and maintenance of technical documentation to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
+ Participates in internal audits, engineering reviews, and risk assessments.
+ Learns and applies safety procedures for handling and maintaining equipment in environments with low-level radioactive materials.
_5. Collaboration, Learning & Development_
+ Works closely with senior engineers, operations staff, and quality teams to gain a holistic understanding of the Nuclear & Precision Health Solutions (NPHS) manufacturing environment.
+ Participates in formal and informal technical training programs, including topics such as cyclotron theory, radiation safety, and automation systems.
+ Contributes to team problem-solving discussions and share technical observations or improvement ideas.
+ Demonstrates initiative in learning new tools, technologies, and regulatory requirements relevant to the role.
Qualifications:
+ 0-2 years of experience, preferred. Co-op or internship experience in manufacturing, medical device, or regulated environments preferred.
+ Bachelor’s degree in related field (Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Science), or equivalent work experience, preferred
+ Foundational understanding of electrical and mechanical design principles, including control systems, power electronics, and thermal management.
+ Proficiency with 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent).
+ Basic familiarity with PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) programming, data acquisition, or PCB (Print Circuit Board) design is a plus.
+ Interest in learning about radiation safety, ALARA principles, and the operation of cyclotron-based systems.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on data-driven decision-making.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to clearly document technical work.
+ Team-oriented mindset with eagerness to learn from experienced professionals.
+ Ability to manage up to 75 lbs
+ Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time to support facility projects or training
