    *CANDIDATE MUST BE IN THE ASSISTANT ARCHITECT CIVIL SERVICE TITLE WITH A NEW YORK CITY AGENCY *

     

    The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

     

    The Facilities Management Division (FMD) administers and supervises the maintenance of the department’s buildings, identifies and implements capital projects involving facility management, and exercises management control over the Architecture & Engineering, Assets & Campus Management, Building Maintenance, Capital Construction, and Custodial Services.

     

    The Assistant Architect, under direction, with broad scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, will serve as the division's assistant architect in support of major administrative, architectural and engineering functions relating to compliance with the building codes, major design, field division, or equivalent, and as a professional assistant on major architectural matters to the agency. The selected candidate will perform specific duties, which include, but are not limited to:

     

    1. Measure and document existing built conditions including architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection elements.

    2. Document existing conditions to NYPD graphics standards with comprehensive identification of all elements and system components.

    3. Identify, assess, and document deteriorated and substandard conditions with detail, and provide resolutions of improvements.

    4. Review local laws, violations and filing requirements with authorities having jurisdiction and associated data.

    5. Take the lead on preparation of detail sketches or layouts, analyses of the spatial organization and efficient utilization of major building components and structures, functional arrangement of interior units, utilities and appurtenances.

    6. Prepare specifications, cost estimates and quantity take-offs, completes various forms and applications.

    7. Ensure timely and complete project delivery.

    8. Evaluate bids, contractors and consultants’ performance to recommend award of contracts for architectural projects as well as reviews submittals, shop drawings, invoices and requests for information.

    9. Assist administrative architectural and engineering staff with all related work.

    Qualifications

    1. A Bachelor or a Master of Architecture degree that is the first professional degree in architecture from an accredited college; or

    2. A Bachelor of Science degree in architecture that is the first four years of a five-year first professional degree program in architecture from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in architectural work; or

    3. A valid New York State Registration as an Architect.

     

    The following are examples of four-year degrees that are NOT acceptable to meet the education requirement: Bachelor of Science in Architectural Technology; Bachelor of Professional Studies in Architecture; Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts issued by the Architectural Department of a college; Bachelor of Science in Art and Design issued by the Architectural Department of a college.

    Note:

    A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
