Summary:
+ The Speech-Language Pathologist provides patient care assessment and treatment. Responsible for mentoring Students and other Rehab Services personnel as assigned. Collaborates with other healthcare team members and physicians in a multi-disciplinary fashion to deliver the highest quality of care. Participates in CQI activities. Facilitates the provision of excellent customer service.
Responsibilities:
1. **Provides patient care assessment and treatment.**
a. Evaluate hearing or speech and language test results, barium swallow results, and medical or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, and swallowing disorder
1.
1. Conducts speech, language, and hearing screenings
2. Administers hearing or speech and language examinations to patients to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written and oral tests and special instruments
3. Evaluate patient’s physical and mental abilities and analyze data to determine realistic rehabilitation plan of care
4. Review regularly physician’s referral and patient’s medical records to help determine diagnosis and treatment required
5. Record prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patient’s chart
6. Educate patients in techniques for more effective communication including voice improvement
7. Develop individual activities and programs to identify and improve behavior, speech, language, or swallowing problems
8. Implement treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed language, swallowing disorders, and inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems, based on own assessments and recommendations of physicians, psychologists, or social workers
9. Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. IEP reports/evaluations)
10. Maintains patient records confidentially
11. Manage equipment and materials including assistive technology utilized in treatments
12. Document and identify progress and plans for reevaluation
13. Evaluates effects of treatment and adjust treatment to maximize benefit
14. Facilitate social adjustment and prevent physical or mental disability

2. Evaluates Patients in a comprehensive age-appropriate manner. Sets quantifiable and realistic goals
3. Utilizes judgment and skills in implementing treatment plans.
4. Physician communication is timely and documentation is up-to-date
5. Patient transfer of mobility is accomplished using appropriate safe patient handling techniques and/or equipment
6. Submits reports in a timely manner
7. Maintains current files for use by personnel appropriately
8. Use appropriate screening instruments
9. Uses and maintains facilities, materials, and equipment in an optimal manner
10. Chooses appropriate therapeutic procedures and materials to meet the needs, age, cultural differences and interests of patient
11. Performs hearing screenings in a timely manner
2. **Facilitates the provision of excellent customer service**

2. Takes the initiative to resolve client concerns or confirms that the appropriate party resolves the concerns.
3. Instructs patient, educational personnel, and family to facilitate skills in areas of occupation as well as health maintenance
4. Educate patient and family in treatment and about topics such as communication techniques and strategies to cope with or to avoid personal misunderstandings
5. Train caregivers and patient how to provide for the needs of patient

7. Sets example, teaches.
8. Monitors and holds co-workers accountable.
9. Effectively provides information to patients, family, and caregivers about speech, language and hearing development
2. **Teamwork**

1. Plan, coordinate, and provide training to family, patient, medical professionals
2. Provide clinical educational opportunities for students and team members
3. Assists peers and other team members with workload as needed
4. Consult with rehabilitation team to select activity programs and coordinate treatment
5. Evaluates effectiveness of personnel assigned to the speech-language pathologist

7. Answers staff questions. Communicates hospital and departmental positions and information.
8. Oversees multi-disciplinary clinical care.
9. Orients new employees.
10. Assists the Manager of Therapy Services in the Performance Development of team members.
11. Mentors students and other rehab services personnel as assigned
12. Confer with patient, medical practioners and appropriate others to plan, implement and assess the intervention program
13. Presents and explains data to IEP Team as requested

Other information:
+ **EDUCATION**
+ Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited School of Speech Language Pathology.
+ **EXPERIENCE**
+ None
+ **LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION**
+ Current NC Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologist temporary or permanent license in Speech Language Pathology. Clinical Fellowship Year or Certification of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
