Job Title: Controller Department: Accounting Supervisor: President Position Summary The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and integrity in financial reporting. This role requires a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with proven experience in health plan finance, including premium revenue, claims reserves, medical loss ratio analysis, and regulatory reporting. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership to drive strategic financial decisions and maintain strong internal controls that support the company’s growth and compliance objectives. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, treasury management, and financial reporting. Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards. Prepare and review financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses. Ensure compliance with federal and state health plan regulations (e.g., CMS, NAIC, TDI, DOI) and support audits and filings as required. Develop and maintain internal control systems to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting. Collaborate with actuaries, auditors, and regulatory agencies during audits, filings, and rate submissions. Provide financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership to support strategic planning and operational efficiency. Supervise and mentor accounting staff; promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement. Supervisory Responsibilities Manages one or more subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of one or more employees in the Finance and Accounting departments. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also directly supervises one or more non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Qualifications Required: Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (master’s preferred). Experience: Minimum 8–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role. Health plan or managed care industry experience preferred (e.g., Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, or commercial insurance). Strong understanding of GAAP, statutory accounting, and healthcare financial reporting. Experience with regulatory filings (e.g., NAIC statements, CMS reporting) strongly preferred. Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment. Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, Workday, Dynamics, or Oracle) and advanced Excel skills. Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Accounting software; Human Resource systems; Spreadsheet software; Word Processing software and Database software.
