The College of Education and Social Services ( CESS ) at the University of Vermont invites nominations and applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Education beginning Fall 2026, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek a literacy scholar motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the CESS mission to "create a more humane and just society”.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an active program of literacy research as evidenced by publications in top tier peer-reviewed scholarly outlets, competitive extramural funding, excellence in teaching and advising, and contributions to academic and professional service activities.

The Department
The Department of Education is home to educator and leadership preparation programs at the UG, Masters, EdD and PhD levels. The programs are nationally accredited and recognized for high-quality student experience, innovative teaching practices, and collegial, inclusive work environments. Faculty are nationally and internationally recognized in their fields. Nationally accredited educator preparation programs, higher education student affairs, interdisciplinary studies, individually designed majors and a host of innovative certificates and minors serve a student population from around the United States.
The Community
UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, a panoramic setting on the shores of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. We are a walkable and bikeable community with University sponsored ride sharing and public transportation. Our regional airport is served by Delta, American, United and other major carriers. We have a rich cultural, civic, and arts community as well as a wide range of outdoor activities in close proximity. Lakes, rivers, and mountains provide a range of outdoor opportunities year-round. Vermont’s size and history support an environment of access and opportunities for collaborative agency partnerships throughout the state and region.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate at the Associate/Full level will assume a range of responsibilities that include:
+ Consistent and cohesive program of research in literacy
+ Excellence in teaching and advising
+ Collegial service contributions
Required Qualifications:
+ Doctoral degree in a literacy education relevant discipline
+ Record of publication commensurate with rank
+ Experience with external grant funding commensurate with rank
+ Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education
+ Evidence of strong collegial, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Experience and skills collaborating with state departments of education and across state institutions on literacy initiatives and change efforts
+ Experience in educator preparation programs
+ Content area expertise in literacy interventions across universal instruction and tier 2 and 3 interventions
+ Experience and commitment that will help elevate UVM’s position as a leader in literacy in the state and beyond

Anticipated Pay Range
9 Months position.
Associate Professor: $96,000-$102,000
Full Professor: $107,000-$120,000
Final offers include a start-up package for research, with salary determinations based upon experience and qualifications.
