    Summary The Medical Instrument Technician (Hemodialysis) is under the direct supervision of the Dialysis Nurse Manager. Medical Instrument Technicians performs invasive hemodialysis procedures utilizing highly complex technical monitoring equipment under the direction or of the Nurse Manager. These procedures are performed upon patients who have diagnoses of End Stage Renal Failure, Acute Renal Failure, and Chronic Renal Failure. Responsibilities Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include: 1. Prepare and set up dialysis machines and equipment according to established policies and procedures. 2. Monitor patient vital signs and equipment functionality before, during and after treatment, including maintenance of a clean and safe treatment environment in both outpatient and inpatient areas. 3. Responds to alarms and make appropriate adjustments to the treatment accordingly and to all dialysis machines. 4. Have the knowledge and will perform bacteriological culture and Endotoxin testing and semiannual chemical testing including provision of results conducted to the Medical Director and Nurse Manager. 5. Collaborative partners with the Dialysis RN to provide hemodialysis treatment to patients with renal failure. Initiates and terminates dialysis treatments following standard procedures. 6. Possesses the knowledge of hemodialysis processes and equipment. Performs the full range of complex hemodialysis treatments, which include Standard, Hi-efficient and Hi-Flux Dialysis methodology utilizing high tech hemodialysis filtration systems. 7. Has a thorough understanding of dialysate concentrates used in hemodialysis and is aware of the absolute exactness that is required in the delivery of the product to the patient. 8. Proficient in accessing various vascular systems and dialysis accesses on patients to initiate the prescribed treatment. 9. Monitors dialysis treatment parameters, e.g., vital signs, weight and weight loss. Collects and records vital signs using blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, scales, and thermometers. Records patients' condition and changes (blood pressure, excess fluid, etc.), and determines proper treatment procedure, technique, and machine adjustments. 10. Connects patient to the dialyzer and operates equipment to initiate extracorporeal circulation and performance of dialysis. 11. Operates, calibrates and maintains medical instruments or equipment. 12. Supports nursing staff, allied health professionals, and medical staff during diagnosis and treatment delivery of patients. 13. Transport patients to and from the dialysis treatment areas for both outpatient and inpatient. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable for positions above the GS-6 as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard (6/7/2012)are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Grade Determinations: GS-08: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-07), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and fully meets the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates the ability to assist physicians in complex procedures such as central venous catheter insertion; assist in training patients in home/self-care by teaching components of machine operation including water treatment and monitoring patients for compliance; acting as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians; analyze deviations from the expected, determine whether the deviations are machine or patient related, and respond according to the findings; providing hemodialysis for chronic patients. In addition to the experience above, your resume must reflect that you possess the following KSAs: Knowledge of the hemodialysis process and equipment needed for home/self care including knowledge of common machine problems and repairs to such equipment. Knowledge of the equipment and procedures for peritoneal dialysis. Ability to assist the physician with percutaneous renal biopsies and peritoneal catheter insertion. Ability to provide instruction to dialysis patients in home/self care and in the maintenance of the equipment.
