    MDHA serves Nashville and Davidson County. The mission of MDHA is to create quality, affordable housing, support neighborhoods, strengthen communities, and help build a greater Nashville.

     

    MDHA employs over 300 staff members, has a budget of $200 million, and houses approximately 30,000 people, primarily through nearly 8,000 Section 8 Vouchers and over 6,800 apartments, which are mainly Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA) units, at 39 properties. MDHA is a housing authority, a community development agency, and a redevelopment agency.

    Position Summary

    The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing advanced accounting functions, including general ledger reconciliations, month-end closing processes, preparing journal entries, financial reporting, conducting thorough variance analyses, and audits. Recognized for executing cost-saving measures and optimizing financial processes, which have resulted in measurable improvements in efficiency and expense management. This role ensures accuracy and compliance with accounting principles and supports organizational financial health.

    Typical Duties

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Manage the month-end and year-end close process to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.

    + Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, journal entries, and reconciliations

    + Maintain and reconcile the general ledger and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and company policies.

    + Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes

    + Facilitate internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries.

    + Collaborate with finance team members to maintain accounting accuracy and efficiency.

    + Conduct bank and account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.

    + Assist in cash flow management and financial data analysis to support decision-making.

    + Ensure compliance with tax laws and assist with tax return preparations.

    + Develop and improve accounting procedures and controls.

    + Communicate with and report to external stakeholders.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Master's or CPA, preferred. 5 to 10 years of professional accounting experience.

    Interact professionally while maintaining effective working relationships with MDHA Leadership, coworkers, company representatives, and government officials; develop and maintain effective working relationships with residents and members of the public. Ability to work effectively under stress, close deadlines, and competing demands.

    Expertise

    Strong proficiency in GAAP, financial, and data management. The knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing fair housing policies and practices; including HUD, LIHTC, Section 8 regulations, and affordable housing standards (preferred for public housing authorities and nonprofits); excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing in both formal and informal settings; must be detail-oriented; ability to analytically solve problems, make sound judgments, and exercise good decision-making; ability to perform short and long-range planning; and ability to stay organized.

    Resilience

    Willingness, mental and physical ability to perform the duties involved in this classification. The ability to perform work with or without accommodation requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk; dexterity of the hands; clarity of vision, speech, and hearing; the power of observation; and other physical duties as required.

     

    Software Proficiency

     

    Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Yardi and RentCafe experience preferred.
