    Microsoft Purview team is responsible for a broad suite of data governance, data security, compliance, privacy, and risk management solutions across Microsoft 365, Azure, and multi-cloud environments.

    Role Summary

    Microsoft Purview empowers organizations to discover, govern, and protect data across their entire digital estate. Purview sits at the center of Microsoft’s compliance and data trust strategy. As AI changes how data flows and is used, our customers need tools that are powerful, cohesive, intuitive, and trustworthy.

     

    We are reimagining how we build Purview—bringing together product, engineering, data, and compliance under empowered “builder pods.” As a M365 Squad Leader, you will take end-to-end ownership of high-impact problem spaces that span privacy, risk, responsible AI, data governance, and user trust.

     

    We are looking to hire a M365 Squad Leader for the Purview team, You’ll lead with insight, build with thoughtful execution and speed, and deliver secure, scalable solutions that help our customers manage their data responsibly in a complex, multi-cloud world.

    The Team

     

    You’ll be embedded in a multidisciplinary Purview Squad directly leading ~10 Engineers and ~1 Product Manager with strong support from leads in research, design, and AI.     You will help ensure the software, tools, and code meets the highest standards for scale and security. This opportunity will allow you to learn about customer scaling requirements and the application of best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations, while ensuring the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility and of course security. You will look for opportunities to raise the security bar as you apply Microsoft’s security policies and best practices.

    Responsibilities

    + Lead adoption of the Squad operating model to enable agility, accountability, and measurable impact.

    + Anticipate market trends, leverage customer insights, and define visionary paths that inspire squads toward ambitious goals.

    + Own usage and customer delight, ensuring products deliver transformative value and foster loyalty.

    + Act as a trusted advisor and executive champion, co-creating strategies that drive mutual growth.

    + Align internal and external partners—engineering, CXE, UX, CELA, Trust teams—around shared success and act as escalation point when needed.

    + Communicate a unified product vision that motivates and aligns squads toward extraordinary outcomes.

    + Foster seamless partnerships across Group Squad Leaders, PMs, Engineering Architects, and domain experts to harmonize efforts.

    + Allocate resources strategically to maximize squad impact and adapt to evolving priorities.

    + Attract and develop top talent, foster inclusion, and leverage insights to elevate squad performance. Manage Rhythm of Business (RoB): Ensure squads complete 1CS reviews, GRC, weekly updates, roadmap reviews, security compliance, and cost management.

    + Identify and own cross-functional problem areas in compliance, data classification, risk detection, privacy management, or regulatory workflows (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)

    + Partner closely across engineering, legal, privacy, AI/ML, design, and customer-facing teams to develop solutions that meet technical, regulatory, and user needs.

    + Leverage AI responsibly to accelerate innovation—e.g., applying semantic search, LLMs, or intelligent automation to governance challenges.

    + Drive experimentation and telemetry-informed decisions to continuously optimize experiences for data stewards, compliance officers, and IT professionals.

    + Contribute to shared patterns and playbooks for full-stack building across the Microsoft Security & Compliance organization.

    Qualifications

    Required qualifications:

    + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + 6+ years of experience taking a product, feature, or experience to market (design, product-market fit, launch, internal tools/frameworks).

    + 6+ years people management experience.

    + 3+ years of experience designing, developing, or maintaining secure software systems, with applied knowledge of authentication, data protection, access control, and secure coding practices

    + 3+ years experience managing multiple priorities, driving clarity, and landing initiatives with measurable impact.

    Other Requirements:

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

     

    + **Microsoft Cloud Background Check:** This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    Preferred qualifications

    + Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 15+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + 8+ years people management experience.

    + 2+ years of experience in product marketing, partner marketing, or go-to-market strategy in the Small and Medium Business (SMB) space.

    + 4+ years of experience taking a product, feature, or experience to market (design, product-market fit, launch, internal tools/frameworks).

    + 4+ years of experience designing, developing, or maintaining secure software systems, with applied knowledge of authentication, data protection, access control, and secure coding practices

    + 7+ years experience managing multiple priorities, driving clarity, and landing initiatives with measurable impact.

    + 6+ years of experience spanning product, engineering, technical compliance, or data governance roles.

    + Technical fluency in data classification, information protection, security & compliance architecture, or Azure-based data services.

    + Familiarity with industry frameworks and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIST).

    + Ability to rapidly prototype and test using tools such as Microsoft Graph, Purview APIs, Power Automate, React, Python, or similar.

    + Proficient collaboration, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

    + Prior experience working on Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Compliance Manager, Insider Risk, DLP, or related platforms.

    + Familiarity with responsible AI principles, model transparency, and automated decision review in regulated environments.

    + Experience with full-stack delivery of low-code/no-code experiences (e.g., via Power Platform or Azure Logic Apps).

    + Understanding of enterprise customer needs and IT professionals.

    + Reliable strategic thinking and ability to translate vision into actionable outcomes.

    + Deep understanding of product lifecycle, customer engagement, and operational excellence.

    + Ability to drive change and foster a culture of agility and accountability.

     

    Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year.

     

    There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
