JOB SUMMARY

Provides reference and reader's advisory services to library customers. Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion. Tracks materials budget. Plans, coordinates, and provides library programs and outreach services. Assists customers in the use of personal computers and electronic resources.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, or in Library and Information Science. Other accredited Master’s degree will be accepted when combined with one (1) year of professional Librarian experience in a public library or school library/media center.

Preference will be given to candidates with MLS/MLIS degrees.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

+ Provides accurate, efficient, and courteous library service to all patrons.

+ Provides reference and reader's advisory services and information about library policies, materials, services, and community resources in person, on the phone, or through electronic communications.

+ Provides information to staff on appropriate ways of working with customers in the library, including children and/or young adults.

+ Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion in the assigned area. Monitors the assigned allocation of the library materials budget.

+ Provides input on the branch collection development plan and strategic goals.

+ Develops, maintains, and participates in outreach activities to promote the use of library materials and services.

+ Creates, coordinates, and provides programs, activities, and resources for the library. Some may be targeted for outreach to children and young adults.

+ Assists customers in the use of personal computers and electronic resources.

+ Serves as librarian-in-charge as assigned or on a rotation basis, handling emergency situations as well as customer complaints.

+ Participates in training workshops, committees, task forces, and other professional development activities.

+ Principles and practices of public librarianship

+ Collection development principles and practices

+ Reference/reader's advisory techniques and resources

+ Programming and outreach methods

+ Basic budgeting principles and recordkeeping

+ Marketing and merchandising techniques

+ Telephone etiquette

Skills and Abilities to:

+ Operate personal computer, automated library system, and other standard library equipment

+ Work with computer software related to job-specific duties

+ Plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments

+ Develop age-level appropriate programs

+ Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers

+ Work independently and also in a team environment

+ Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

+ Problem solve and make sound decisions

+ Work effectively with people from diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds

+ Organize data and track expenditures

+ Handle emergencies and appropriately resolve complaints and conflicts
