    Position Summary

    The Department for the Performing Arts at SUNY Geneseo is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Music with primary teaching duties in the area of woodwind and/or brass studio instruction, jazz ensemble directing, and one additional area of expertise. Studio teaching would include instruction on trumpet, trombone, clarinet, or saxophone, while additional areas of expertise might include music education (instrumental methods), conducting, music technology, jazz composition and arranging, and wind ensemble conducting. The department offers a B.A. in Music with tracks in Performance, History/Theory/Criticism/Composition, Jazz and American Music, Music Recording and Production. The department also offers a B.F.A. and B.A. in Musical Theatre and a B.A. in Theatre. Students from other majors actively participate in department ensembles, productions, and in a wide variety of general education courses. The highly-qualified faculty sustain active profiles in performance and scholarship; applications are sought from candidates who will enhance the department’s strengths in teaching and creative activity.

    Duties of the position include:

    + Serve as primary instructor in trumpet, trombone, clarinet, and/or saxophone, including studio instruction for majors and non-majors, and weekly studio class, performance seminar, or studio ensemble

    + Direct the department’s Jazz Ensemble, as well as coach one or two jazz combos

    + Teach courses in music, including courses on conducting and courses for the college’s general education program.

    + Serve as Coordinator of Winds, Brass, and Percussion, including overseeing instrumental auditions, music rentals and purchasing, maintenance of the department’s instrument collection, brass, winds, and percussion juries

    + Establish a program of scholarly work or creative activity

    + Provide academic advising to students

    + Contribute to the Department and College governance

    + Contribute through service to the discipline and the College

    Required Qualifications

    + A doctoral degree in jazz, jazz pedagogy, music performance, or a related field, by time of appointment in August 2026

    + Experience conducting jazz ensembles

    + Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college level

    + Preparation to teach in multiple subject areas offered by the Music Department

    + Potential for scholarly and/or creative activity

    + A record of successful management of administrative duties is required

    + A strong commitment to supporting diversity, equity, inclusivity, and an environment of belonging

    + Candidates for this position must be legally permitted to work in the United States. VISA sponsorship is not available.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + A minimum of two years of full-time teaching at the undergraduate level

    + Experience teaching conducting

    + Experience in ensemble direction, management, and development at the college level

    + Potential for effective student recruiting and for developing and pursuing ensemble outreach and touring opportunities

    + Experience teaching in an online and/or hybrid setting
