    Job Description

As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills, and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty.

The Olympic Natural Resources Center has a great opportunity for a Research Analyst 3 to join their team.

The Olympic Natural Resources Center (https://www.onrc.washington.edu/) (ONRC), located in Forks, WA, is administered by the University of Washington’s College of Environment, and the School of Environment and Forest Sciences. The center was established in 1991 by the Washington Legislature to pursue the goal of better integrating ecology and economics in the management of both forest and marine resources. ONRC’s current focus is to help sustain our treasured resources by serving as catalyst to simultaneously improve the wellbeing of communities and environment. We pursue this goal through research, education, outreach, and collaboration. Our work includes the T3 Watershed Experiment, one of the largest-scale replicated forestry experiments in the country. This approach has helped us serve Washington by bridging across the different perspectives of researchers and managers and among various stakeholder and tribal communities.

ONRC is hiring a research analyst to support the ONRC forestry research and engagement mission including

1.) processing and analyzing aerial- and drone-based LiDAR, imagery (e.g., multispectral), and other remotely sensed data collected on ONRC’s research sites

2.) managing data storage and transfers

3.) representing the ONRC forestry research scientist in field, in-person, and online situations

4.) assisting with the recruiting and training of ONRC interns who will collect spatial data that this position will process and use

5.) conducting field work and data collection when needed

6.) help disseminating research results through publications and presentations.

This is a temporary, 12-month position with the possibility of extending it another 12 months. A permanent research analyst position at ONRC may develop during this time that this position could apply for.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

+ Analyze aerial- and drone-based LiDAR and multispectral imagery data from ONRC’s long-term research sites including the T3 Watershed Experiment, the four experimental sites of the Long-term Ecosystem Productivity study in Oregon and Washington, the ethnoforestry field trials, a 50k-acre planning effort with the Olympic National Forest (Jimmycomelately study), and others that may emerge. Remote sensing is linked to our ground-based data collected by ONRC and WA Department of Natural Resources and crews.

+ Develop remote sensing based predictive models (e.g., random forest) that allow us to ask and address ecological, economic, or social science questions at larger scales.

+ Help develop a curriculum for teaching forestry professionals on ways to use digital methods, including remote sensing technologies, in their work. Assist with teaching these courses.

+ Manage data storage and data transfers to stakeholders and tribes. Work as the remote sensing data steward for the T3 Watershed Experiment.

+ Assist with the recruiting, training, and logistics for the ONRC summer intern crew team, including preparing datasheets, georeferenced maps, protocols, routes in and out of sites, etc.

+ Track supplies needed for the field season and coordinate ordering and delivery to the crew. Work with the field crew leader to provide additional assistance as needed.

+ Participate in field work and data collection process to obtain the needed ground data for remote sensing analyses and support other research

+ Represent the ONRC forestry research scientist in the field and online

+ Assist with publications from and presentations of research studies.

    Minimum Requirements:

+ Bachelor’s Degree including college-level course work in statistics AND two years of work experience as a Research Analyst II.

_Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._

    Desired Qualifications:

+ Proficiency in R Studio, FUSION, Cloud Compare, and ArcGIS Pro.

+ Proficiency using and applying machine learning models.

+ One or more years of experience processing remote sensing data, including drone and aerial LiDAR and drone imagery.

+ A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in forest ecology, biology, botany, forestry, or other related field.
