    This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the primary work location will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location.     This position provides expert-level leadership in the interpretation, application, and advancement of the Minnesota State Building Code, with a focus on commercial construction standards. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert, offering technical assistance, regulatory guidance, and professional training to municipal building officials, architects, engineers, construction professionals, division staff, and the general public. The role also supports strategic initiatives that promote workforce development, regulatory consistency, and mental health awareness within the construction industry.

    Core Responsibilities:

    + Code Research & Evaluation: Conduct in-depth analysis of local, state, and national building code provisions to support consistent, safe, and effective application of commercial construction standards.

    + Education & Training Leadership: Design, coordinate, and deliver technical training programs, seminars, and workshops on the Minnesota State Building Code, tailored to diverse audiences across the construction and regulatory sectors.

    + Stakeholder Engagement & Inter-agency Coordination: Collaborate with municipal, state, and federal agencies to promote uniformity in code interpretation and enforcement. Serve as a liaison to ensure alignment across regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders.

    + Project & Grant Management: Lead initiatives related to code adoption, implementation, and education. Oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables. Support the development and administration of grants that advance division priorities.

    + Mental Health Advocacy in Construction: Champion efforts to improve mental health awareness and support within the construction workforce. Develop educational resources, promote policy initiatives, and foster cross-sector partnerships that enhance psychological safety and well-being.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Must be certified as a Building Official by the State of Minnesota.

    + Four (4) years’ experience providing education or serving as a subject matter expert on Minnesota State Building code requirements, inspections techniques and best practices in construction.

    + Working knowledge of the State building code.

    + Skill to create, develop and present educational content on construction code related items.

    + Ability to provide subject matter expertise rulemaking support associated with the Minnesota State Building Code.

    + Knowledge of local and state regulatory functions as outlined in Minnesota Rule 1300, Minnesota Building Codes and federal energy codes.

    + Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or common experiences.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).
