Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The AV Systems Engineer within the Learning Space Technology team at UNC Charlotte designs, maintains, and supports effective and accessible learning environments for faculty, students, and staff. This position applies advanced knowledge of AV design, networking, and control systems to support new and existing classroom technologies across campus. Responsibilities include creating, testing, and deploying GUI interfaces and AV control system programs, as well as configuring and coding advanced AV control solutions.
The Engineer assists the AV Integration Manager with the design and documentation of AV installation projects, including material lists, diagrams, and related technical materials. The position provides integration assistance, system commissioning, and technical support for internal and external AV installations, occasionally serving as project manager during peak periods. The Engineer utilizes departmental project management tools to track progress and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
Serving as a liaison between the Learning Space Technology AV Integration team and the University’s OneIT Networking team, the AV Systems Engineer coordinates the configuration, integration, and management of networked AV devices and managed network switches to ensure reliable performance and compliance with University network standards.
The Engineer also collaborates with Classroom Support staff and student employees to monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve advanced programming or system issues, providing tier 3 support as needed. This position develops staff capabilities through technical guidance and maintains centralized monitoring systems such as Crestron Fusion and Extron Global Viewer for classroom AV equipment oversight and reporting.
+ Designs, programs, and supports advanced audiovisual (AV) systems that enhance teaching and learning spaces across UNC Charlotte.
+ Develops and maintains AV control systems, interfaces, and network integrations to ensure reliable and accessible classroom technology.
Responsibilities include:
+ Assisting with AV project design and documentation, managing installations and commissioning, and coordinating with the University’s Networking team on system connectivity.
+ Provides tier 3 technical support, mentors support staff, and maintains centralized AV monitoring platforms to ensure system performance and user satisfaction.
+ Develops staff capabilities through technical guidance and maintains centralized monitoring systems such as Crestron Fusion and Extron Global Viewer for classroom AV equipment oversight and reporting.
Minimum Experience / Education:
Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
+ Five (5) or more years of experience in audiovisual (AV) systems design, integration, and control programming within higher education, corporate, or large-scale institutional environments.
+ Advanced expertise in AV systems, including Crestron and Extron control systems ( GUI interface design and custom code development), and network-based technologies such as Dante and AV-over-IP.
+ Proficient in AV system design and documentation, with the ability to create and interpret line diagrams, signal flow drawings, equipment lists, and rack elevations using tools such as StarDraw, AutoCAD, and XTEN -AV; experienced with monitoring platforms like Crestron Fusion and Extron GlobalViewer.
+ Strong technical and project management capabilities, utilizing project management software to track milestones and deliverables while providing advanced (Tier 3) technical support and troubleshooting for complex AV systems.
+ Highly organized and detail-oriented communicator, adept at managing multiple priorities, clearly explaining technical concepts to non-technical users, and maintaining professional certifications such as AVIXA CTS -I/ CTS -D, Crestron Certified Programmer, Extron Control Professional, and Extron Scripter.
