    With its headquarters in San Jose, Valley Water provides water supply, enhances streams and watersheds through creek restoration and habitat protection, and provides flood protection for homes, schools, businesses, and roadways in Santa Clara County. In support of Valley Water’s mission to provide flood protection and watersheds stewardship services to Santa Clara County, the Engineering Technician will perform a variety of inspection and reporting duties related to Valley Water’s streams, levees, and infrastructure maintenance.

    Valley Water is a public agency with an operating and capital budget of $964 million, and over 900 employees.     Vegetation Field Operations Unit Position:

    Working with the Vegetation Field Operations Unit, the Engineering Technician position will provide technical support for routine and corrective vegetation management activities within Valley Water managed creeks and rivers and on dams. This role will work directly with Vegetation Program Specialists coordinating vegetation management for flow conveyance and infrastructure integrity, fuel reduction through weed abatement, invasive plant management, and maintenance access. This position will assist with field inspections, data collection, documentation, and reporting related to planned and accomplished work. Typical data collection will include plant species and site characteristics, project limits, and photos.

     

    Technical support will also be through the use of database programs and applications such as the SMP Oracle Database, Maximo, and ArcGIS to modify and update existing work area polygons, create new maps for routine and corrective work, and to create work orders for vegetation management.

     

    Additionally, this position will assist with customer service requests received through the Access Valley Water (AVW) system by confirming Valley Water right-of-way and maintenance obligations, confirming field conditions as needed, and responding to customers with planned maintenance actions.

    Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    + Performing field inspections of vegetation management work in progress or recently completed for documentation, planning, and reporting purposes related to SMP activities using GPS enabled equipment and applications such as Survey 123.

    + Using ArcGIS, updating county-wide program specific shapefiles related to routine vegetation maintenance activities for use with work orders.

    + Assisting with data management and reporting to regulatory agencies associated with Valley Water’s Stream Maintenance Program (SMP).

    + Assisting with customer service requests received through the Access Valley Water system by confirming Valley Water right of way and maintenance obligations, confirming field conditions as needed, and responding to customers with planned maintenance actions.

    O&M Engineering Support Unit Position:

    Working within the Watersheds O&M Engineering Support Unit, this position will help conduct field investigation and assessment activities along streams, levees, and maintenance roads, and perform corresponding data collection and mapping using GPS tools and GIS software programs. The position will help prepare work orders for field crews and help prepare reports on work performed for Valley Water assets. The position will also provide support with internal and external customer requests via the Access Valley Water (AVW) communications system. The position reports to an Associate Engineer-Civil, and will work closely with field operations administrators, engineering technicians, and engineers, among others.

    Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    + Conducting and leading field investigations and related activities for Valley Water’s watersheds assets.

    + Researching and responding to requests via Valley Water's Access Valley Water (AVW) communications system.

    + Preparing work orders utilizing Maximo system.

    + Preparing GIS maps, conducting research, and providing support for engineering work.

    + Preparing reports relative to data collected and work performed.

    + Attending and participating in required meetings and training.

    Engineering Technician I

    Some Knowledge of:

    + Methods and techniques of map making.

    + Best practices for office procedures, methods, and equipment, and applications related to the work including GPS and GIS programs.

    Engineering Technician II

    In addition to the qualifications for Engineering Technician I:

    Some Knowledge of:

    + Principles and practices of property research, including boundary determination and land title examination.

    + Principles of research and report preparation.

    + Methods and techniques of designing and creating visual graphics and displays.

    + Civil engineering practices and terminology in assigned program area.

    + Operations, services, and activities of a public water agency.

    + Principles and methods of spatial analysis.

    Working Knowledge of:

    + Principles and practices of manual and computer-aided drafting and design.

    + Operational characteristics of hardware and software applications in assigned areas, including technical engineering, graphics presentation, GPS, and GIS programs.

    + Best practices for office procedures, methods, and equipment, and applications related to the work including GPS and GIS programs.

    Ability to:

    + Research, collect, and analyze documentation and related technical data.

    + Perform property research activities, including boundary determination and land title examination.

    + Prepare engineering maps, drawings, diagrams, and other technical documents and materials.

    + Prepare a variety of visual graphics and display materials.

    + Perform responsible technical engineering support work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.

    Operations and Maintenance Engineering Support Unit / Vegetation Field Operations Unit (Position Code 334 / 15)

    Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

     

    This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite, after completion of the probationary period (6 months).
