    The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for an accelerated tenure-track Associate Professor beginning Fall 2026. Candidates with prior chair experience or significant leadership experience are strongly desired. The successful candidate will be expected to provide departmental leadership and, pending departmental approval, assume the role of department chair. Expectations also include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, student advisement, college service, and continuing professional development.

     

    The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability is home to majors in Geography and Environmental Sustainability and seeks to enhance its expertise in Environmental Health and Safety. The Department's faculty are highly collegial and deeply engaged as teachers, scholars, and mentors, fostering a collaborative and dynamic learning environment. The Department is part of the School of Sciences, which includes 10 academic departments and more than 2,300 students across 20 programs, offering strong opportunities for engagement and professional growth.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    + Teach courses in the Geography, Environmental Health, Environmental Sustainability, and other courses to meet department needs, as well as advise students.

    + Conduct independent or collaborative research.

    + Provide service to the department and university.

    + Expectation to Chair the Department following a year of preparation (pending departmental approval).

    Job Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

    + PhD in Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, or related discipline.

    + Ability to teach courses listed in duties above.

    + Current appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (or higher) at an accredited college or university.

    + Demonstrated experience in academic and department leadership roles, such as chairing or similar roles.

    Preferred:

    + Ability to manage budgets, schedule courses, preside over meetings, and provide academic leadership.

    + Expertise in one or more of the following

    + Environmental Monitoring, Sustainability, & GIS

    + Planning (Urban, Environmental, etc.)

    + Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Occupational Health and Safety, Hazardous Waste Operations and Management, Wastewater Treatment, Air Quality, Zoonotic Disease

    + Medical Geography, Environmental Health, or related

    + Teaching Study Abroad Programs

    + Physical Geography

    + World Regional Geography

    + Excellence in Teaching, Research, & Service Experience.

    + Experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/ or multicultural teaching experience.
