    The Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department is dedicated to the well-being and care of all its patients. We work with great people, great clinicians, and great educators with a passion for animals and educating others that allows us to provide total care for animal patients while helping to train the next generation of veter i narians.

     

    What we want

     

    The Veterinary Resident trains in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of board-certified veterinary specialists. Veterinary Residents are expected to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage patients, interact with clients, teach senior veterinary students, and generate income for the teaching hospital.

    Salary: $45,000 annual salary

    Physical requirements and other factors:

    + Stands on feet for extended periods of time.

    + Must be able to lift or move objects and/or animals of medium weight.

    + Works beyond normal offices hours and/or work on weekends. The Residents will be directly supervised 85% of the time.

    + The Intern will be supervised by boarded specialist while having primary case care responsibility for complex cases. Additionally, the Intern will have the opportunity to interact with more than 49 small animal faculty members, 30 large animal faculty, and 30 interns and residents in the VMTH.

    Required Education and Experience

    + Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Completed one-year of internship or must have received equivalent experience in a private practice.

    + State of Texas Veterinary License. Must have a passing score on the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and the Texas State Board examination.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + A graduate of College of Veterinary Medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or having certification by the AVMA’s education commission for foreign veterinary graduates (ECFVG) or the program for the assessment of veterinary education equivalence (PAVE).

    Responsibilities

    + Use independent judgement to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage patients in a specialty veterinary area. Performs complex and advanced procedures and treatments.

    + Conducts case management and procedures with supervision. Communicates and interacts with clients regarding patient status, diagnoses, and procedures.

    + Contributes to the training of graduate and undergraduate students. Trains in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of board-certified veterinary specialists.

    + Attends and participates in topic and patient rounds.

    + Collects and publishes data from clinical cases or from clinical research projects.

    + Prepares and delivers one high quality seminar to colleagues in their academic department each year.
