    Job Overview

     

    The Director of Protocol and Events leads the University's efforts in planning, coordinating, staffing, and managing protocol for special events that involve high-level visitors, including the President and Vice President of the U.S., Cabinet members, Congress, the Department of State, foreign heads of states, business, and cultural leaders and celebrities. S/he serves as the principal advisor to the internal community, including the Office of the President, senior administrators, deans, department chairs, and faculty relating to all aspects of planning and execution of events and pertaining to policy and protocol and their involvement in the event. S/he serves as the liaison to the external community, including Secret Service, Diplomatic Security, the White House, the diplomatic corps, other government agencies, the entertainment industry and other private sectors, relating to events on Georgetown's campus.

     

    S/he will serve as an expert on the Georgetown University Speech and Expression policy and protocol issues and develops standards to ensure that the University's events run uniformly and successfully. Georgetown frequently hosts national and international dignitaries. S/he staffs the University President, who is often the official University greeted for dignitaries, and also regularly interacts and serves as the lead point of contact with the visiting officials and their staffs.

     

    The Director of Protocol and Events works closely with numerous University offices including: the Office of Communications, the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Government Relations and Community Engagement, Office of Planning and Facilities Management, the Georgetown University Police Department and the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety, ensuring that these offices coordinate closely to produce successful events.

     

    The Director of Protocol and Events will manage all aspects of event preparation including security, audio and visual set-ups, construction of settings and scenery, invitations, traffic flow, logistics, parking, volunteer coordination and media relations. This position is also responsible for the formation and development of program content for events; suggests, plans and coordinates appropriate work to be accomplished, such as decor, music, entertainment, seating arrangements, transportation and scenarios for events. Because of the heavy volume of high-profile events that occur at Georgetown, and the fact that many inquiries come from prominent positions in various government, business and non-profit sectors, it is crucial that this employee have impeccable judgment, combined with a working knowledge of the University's goals and priorities.

     

    S/he will serve as the primary liaison, alongside staff and faculty advisors, to the Lecture Fund and other student groups that host events and speakers. S/he will also serve as a member of the University's Emergency Response Team, a role of greater scope and responsibility given potential security issues.

     

    Work Interactions

     

    The Director of Protocol and Events reports directly to the Vice President for Public Affairs and Senior Advisor to the President. This position works closely with the University President and other University leaders on all campuses and in all departments. S/he works closely with students, alumni, volunteers, embassies, government agencies, the Department of State, the White House, Secret Services and other non-profit and private organization.

     

    Frequently, this position works on simultaneous major events with high-profile dignitaries weeks in advance or with hours notice, and s/he must be able to plan and prepare accordingly. S/he will be required to serve as on-call representative of the Office, work flexible hours, and respond in a timely and professional manner to inquiries from internal and external constituents. This position will also supervise and direct the work of co-workers and volunteers at those events.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    + Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field

    + Five to eight years of experience in public relations, events management or a related are is also required; It is required that three of those years have been spent working solely on events management

    + Must possess strong oral and written communications skills

    + Excellent judgment, and the ability to work under extreme tight deadlines and considerable pressure

    + Must also have excellent interpersonal skills

    + Be highly attentive to details

    + Very flexible, and willing to work long and frequently unpredictable hours

    + Must be someone who is suitable as a representative of Georgetown to national and international leaders and as the University's official greeter

    + A working knowledge of national and international protocol is desired. She must be able to effectively work in crisis management

    + A working knowledge of Georgetown University is desired but not required

    Pay Range:

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

    $66,783.00 - $126,720.23

     

    Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
