IT@JH Research Computing is seeking an **_IT Manager, Research Computing_** who drives service delivery and operations for advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, AI research infrastructure, and GPU/CPU cluster environments. This role leads and mentors a team of Systems Engineers and Administrators while remaining deeply technical and hands-on, actively designing, deploying, and tuning large-scale parallel filesystems, high-speed InfiniBand/Ethernet fabrics, containerized workloads, and GPU-accelerated compute. Partnering closely with the Director and HPC Architect, the manager shapes present and future capabilities, including exascale-class compute growth, next-generation AI/ML frameworks, and data-intensive research workflows. The position balances operational excellence with innovation, implementing secure, scalable, and reliable solutions that enable cutting-edge discovery across Johns Hopkins University’s research community.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
_Strategy & Planning_
+ Provide input and recommendations to and/or formulates plans. Takes direction from leadership to implement those plans for the success of the unit.
+ With an awareness of the organization’s needs as well as the larger technology landscape of the institution, implement technology solutions that meet departmental needs.
+ Help establish budgetary goals and provides input towards priorities. May develop IT operations budget.
+ Participate in the establishment of technology policies and practices and implements them to ensure security and regulatory compliance.
_Relationship Management_
+ Represent organizational IT, academic or administrative leadership, in meetings related to IT policies and procedures across the institution.
+ Manage the customer relationship and satisfaction as well as adherence to service level agreements.
+ Create and promote a culture of excellent customer service.
+ Maintain relationships with customer base to better understand their needs and address organizational goals.
+ Establish and maintain ties with colleagues throughout the institution to ensure optimal collaboration and coordination of effort.
+ Maintain relationships with technology vendors for the department.
_Project/Produce Responsibility_
+ Within functional scope has direct responsibility for the design, development, and application of technical solutions that satisfy customer needs and are essential to the ongoing operations of the department or IT function.
+ Responsible for multiple IT projects that impact the department or IT function, including requirements gathering, planning, delegation of component tasks to team members and monitoring progress toward completion.
+ As necessary, actively participates in group’s delivery of services.
_Staff Management_
+ Recruit, develop, retain, organize, and manage performance of staff.
+ Assigns tasks, monitors progress, and provides guidance.

+ Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, system administrators, and technical staff.
+ Lead recruitment, hiring, performance management, and career development of direct reports.

_Operational Oversight_
+ Direct daily operations of HPC clusters, GPU computing platforms, storage systems, and associated research IT infrastructure.
+ Manage incident response, system availability, patching, and upgrades to ensure reliable and secure services.
+ Implement IT service management practices, including monitoring, SLAs/OLAs, documentation, and change management.
+ Oversee system lifecycle planning, including refreshes, upgrades, and decommissioning of hardware/software.
_Service Delivery & Support_
+ Translate researcher requirements into operational services that scale across disciplines and projects.
+ Work with faculty committees, researchers, and campus IT to align services with institutional priorities.
+ Oversee user support processes: onboarding, training, ticket resolution, and proactive communication.
+ Ensure compliance with security, regulatory, and grant requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FISMA, export control, OMB Uniform Guidance).
_Strategic Planning & Coordination_
+ Partner with the Enterprise Architect and campus IT leaders to align service delivery with long-term HPC strategies.
+ Participate in capacity planning, budget preparation, and financial sustainability modeling for services.
+ Track emerging technologies and recommend operational improvements for CPU/GPU platforms, schedulers, storage, and data lifecycle management.
+ Represent University Research Computing in committees, governance groups, and collaborative initiatives across the University.
_Continuous Improvement_
+ Drive automation and operational efficiency within cluster management, monitoring, and user support workflows.
+ Establish and refine best practices for reproducible, transparent, and secure research computing operations.
+ Champion documentation, knowledge sharing, and cross-training within the team.
+ Advance University Research Computing’s customer service culture, ensuring responsiveness and professionalism in all interactions.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's Degree.
+ Five years of progressively responsible IT-related experience.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
+ Master’s Degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
+ Eight years of progressively responsible IT experience.
+ Five years in a leadership/management role, supervising technical teams.
+ Demonstrated expertise in systems administration and IT service delivery.
+ Experience managing large-scale Linux computing environments, storage, or GPU/CPU clusters.
+ Prior experience managing HPC or large-scale research computing services.
+ Familiarity with workload schedulers (e.g., Slurm), high-performance storage, and high-speed interconnects.
+ Understanding of compliance requirements relevant to research IT (HIPAA, FISMA, export control).
+ Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across research and administrative communities.
+ Experience in higher education or research-intensive environments.
