    We are seeking a **_Sr. Research Nutritionist_** who is a specialist in clinical research nutrition management with advanced expertise in nutrition and specialized nutritional therapies. The Sr. Research Nutritionist plays a key role in the creation, recommendation and provision of nutritional therapies and the development of the nutritional component of research protocols. The position participates as co-investigator and nutritional consultant for research protocols. This position precepts staff and student research assistants. The position reports to the ICTR Nutrition Program Manager/Director and interacts heavily with research coordinators and faculty clinical investigators.

     

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    _Research_

    + Design and develop specialized menus and metabolic formulas based on research participants’ lab values (serum levels) amino acid levels and fatty acid levels.

    + Work with faculty interested in studying rare disorders such as peroxisomal disorders, gyrate atrophy, inborn errors of metabolism.

    + Develop details of the specialized diet contingent on the serum levels of the patients.

    + Calculate and distribute the correct amount of experimental therapies for disease specific conditions, such as epilepsy and obesity hypoventilation syndrome patients.

    + Participate in the developmental work of nutritional components of the research study, design specialized diets, direct production and service of these diets.

    + Assume active role in professional writing, publication, and developing programs to further the goals of the units.

    + Design placebo and study drug formulas for double-blinded studies for physician investigators. This involves the specialized design to mask taste, smell, and texture of the study drug. Formulas may be in capsule, shake, or food form.

    + Actively publishes and presents at national, state and local conferences.

    + Coordinates medical nutrition therapy and serves as a liaison to other departments within Johns Hopkins as well as outside agencies to include the Maryland Department of Health Services as well as other local hospitals.

    _Training_

    + Precepts and instructs dietetic interns and other hospital staff on research dietetics, metabolic techniques, protocol development, and current research topics.

    + Presents in-service trainings.

    _Clinical_

    + Monitor and evaluates nutritional care of research participants.

    + Act as a resource for physicians, nurses, dietitians, patient care committees, etc.

    + Participate in staff rounds, attend protocol presentations and discusses nutritional services with medical staff.

    + Available after hours for nutrition consultation with physicians, nutrition staff and nursing staff. (On-call basis)

    _Program Support_

    + Assist Nutrition Research Director in the training and development of the Clinical Research Nutrition Assistants and junior level research nutritionists.

    + Assist Nutrition Research Director in the evaluation of program goals, policies and procedures, standards of care and performance improvement.

    + Assist Nutrition Research Director in program development, advisory councils and other projects.

    + Assist Nutrition Research Director in execution of the research nutrition rotation program for internship programs from Johns Hopkins Bayview MC, University of Maryland Medical Systems, Sodexho, and University of Maryland College Park

    + Prepares reports, collects and analyzes data, and maintains records.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Science or directly related field

    + Registered Dietitian licensed by the State MD.

    + Three years related experience, with experience in nutrition research and health related nutrition programming.

    + Knowledge of clinical research processes and regulations

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Special Skill/Knowledge

    + Analytical ability to critically evaluate and design research protocols.

    + Computer literacy.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Master’s Degree or higher preferred

    Starting Salary Range: $55,800 - $97,600 Annually ($61,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
