Essential functions (job duties):
The Department of Mathematics at Wayne State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin on 8/18/2026. The search is open to candidates in Optimization, Stochastic Modeling, and Applied Probability—fields foundational to complex systems modeling and central to modern machine learning. Candidates whose research includes computational components or contributes to the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent, externally funded research program and demonstrate potential for excellence in both teaching and service.
This is an exciting time to join Wayne State University, which is making significant investments in AI and data science. The newly established Institute for AI and Data Science provides a rapidly growing platform for interdisciplinary research and collaboration across the university.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related field by the start date.
Demonstrated potential for high-quality research and effective teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
