About the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS)
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a world-leading scientific user facility operated by Stanford University on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. LCLS enables transformative research across materials science, chemistry, biology, and physics; advancing discoveries in clean energy, quantum materials, and structural biology.
Major upgrades, including LCLS-II and LCLS-II-HE, are delivering a more than thousandfold increase in X-ray repetition rate, from 120 to 1 million pulses per second, representing a transformative leap in photon science capabilities. To fully leverage this advancement, LCLS is executing a diverse portfolio of engineering projects aimed at enhancing and expanding the facility's performance, flexibility, and scientific reach.
These projects encompass the design and development of next-generation X-ray optics, precision opto-mechanical assemblies, and ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic systems, as well as advanced controls, diagnostics, and instrumentation to manage high average power and beam stability at unprecedented repetition rates. Collectively, these efforts enable the LCLS-II and LCLS-II-HE facilities to support a new generation of experiments, delivering higher data throughput, improved reliability, and new modes of operation that will redefine what is possible in ultrafast X-ray science.
SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA.
