    Job Summary

    The Assistant Director (AD), Engineering, works to promote the programs, partnerships, and strategic agenda of the engineering library's support of the College of Engineering's teaching and research enterprise. This position is held by an experienced liaison librarian who supports the Associate Director in providing vision for the Engineering librarians within the HS-STEM division to support campus research, teaching, and learning.

     

    The Assistant Director collaborates with a dynamic team of subject specialists committed to excellent standards of library service and outreach, and takes the lead on direct departmental liaison responsibilities. The AD is a member of HS-STEM ADs group and other committees as relevant.

     

    The AD promotes the Library's mission to contribute to the creation and distribution of scholarship through active outreach, relationship development, and partnership with the campus community.

     

    Reporting Structure

     

    You will report to the Associate Director, Engineering Library, HS-STEM. This position's mode of work is hybrid.

    Responsibilities*

    Liaison Activities, Reference, Instruction, and Outreach (50%)

    + Support liaison area faculty, students and researchers with grant and funding opportunities through out the research life cycle. Support synchronous or asynchronous library instruction for courses such as first year engineering and senior design capstone classes, scalable instruction efforts including updating and preparing online Canvas modules, and library guides for AAEL services and collections.

    + Give tours and lectures regarding the Art, Architecture, and Engineering Library (AAEL) and its resources.

    + Contribute to engineering library outreach efforts, such as workshops and other engagement activities.

    Administration (25%)

    + Collaborate with the Associate Director, Engineering Library, to oversee the academic and research activities of librarians and staff.

    + Work as part of the HS-STEM administrative team to implement HS-STEM services and activities.

    Collection Development (10%)

    + Evaluate and select materials and information resources in relevant subject areas for inclusion in the collection.

    + Participate as a Selector in developing priorities for digital collection projects.

    Innovation (5%)

    + Track and bring to the Engineering Library and Research division any new developments in Engineering Librarianship (such as GenAI trends and practices, new open access models, and research lifecycle practices).

    Professional Development & Service (10%)

    + Participate in a range of professional activities that comprise continuing commitments to research, teaching, service, and leadership.

    + Perform service to the profession and discipline.

    Required Qualifications*

    + MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of relevant degree and experience.

    + Two years of recent experience in an academic Engineering library setting.

    + Evidence of working cooperatively and collaboratively with library leadership teams.

    + Experience building collaborations with faculty, researchers, and academic librarians in Engineering.

    + Knowledge of best practices related to research data management; familiarity with data management requirements of federal agencies.

    + Experience working in an academic setting to support the research life cycle.

    + Demonstrated leadership in the profession through scholarly publications, presentations, and participation in national professional organizations including best practices in communication, research, and academic publishing in Engineering.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's or an advanced degree in science, engineering, or medicine, or equivalent combination of academic training and work experience.

    + Managerial experience including training, developing, and mentoring staff or students.

    + Experience with grant proposals, administration and working on grant-funded projects.

    + Experience performing and coordinating collection development and management activities, including Collection budget management, local and consortial planning for purchasing, repository, and sharing programs.

    + Membership in American Society for Engineering Education and Engineering Library Division.

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Additional Information

     

    The anticipated hire date is May 2026.

     

    The Appointment is anticipated as a Sr. Associate Librarian. Salary and rank are dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $76,000 - $90,000 for the Sr. Associate Librarian rank.

     

    This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement.

     

    Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library'sprocess for librarian promotion and advancemen (https://staff.lib.umich.edu/content/policy-promotion-and-appointment-librarians) t.

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, on behalf of their Librarian, Archivists, and Curator bargaining unit (LEO-GLAM), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
