Posting Summary
The Director of Environmental Health & Safety ( EHS ), reporting to the Chief Safety & Compliance Officer, provides strategic direction for, and leadership of, a comprehensive University-wide environmental health and safety program. This position works with university leadership to assure that EHS risks are identified, assessed, and addressed, and works within a broader division with a universal commitment to workplace diversity and inclusion, environmental sustainability, and ensures that EHS initiatives are aligned with the University’s mission and goals, while fostering a proactive culture of safety across all academic, research, and operational activities.
Direct the development, implementation, integration, and management of policies and programs necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the surrounding community and ensure that University operations comply with relevant federal, state, and local environmental health and safety codes and regulations.
In 2026, areas of special emphasis include supporting the growth of the University’s research enterprise (including a variety of operations such as biosafety programs) and continuing work to modernize Department operations.
EHS Programs include:
Safety for the entire University community.
- Occupational health including respiratory protection, OSHA compliance for construction and general industry, and industrial hygiene.
- Research occupational safety, including chemical, biological, radiation safety, hazardous energy, and general laboratory safety and compliance.
- Environmental compliance, including hazardous waste management, and asbestos/lead abatement.
- Safety and loss prevention in academics, research, student life, and University facilities.
The Director:
- Oversees the, Biosafety officer, Radiation Safety Officer, Laser Safety Officer, Laboratory Safety/Chemical Hygiene Program Manager, the Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Environmental Compliance Manager, and other safety officials.
- Regularly briefs the Chief Safety & Compliance Officer about operations, incidents, events, plans, and strategies.
- Serves as liaison between the University and the external regulatory agencies and stakeholders with regard to EHS planning, issues, reviews, inquiries, and audits.
- Develops strategic partnerships with campus leadership, including Deans, Directors, and Chairs in order to achieve “beyond compliance” goals related to workplace health and safety.
- Ensures appropriate supervision and professional development of EHS staff; ensures appropriate delegation of EHS assignments and responsibilities.
- Ensures that the EHS staff are prepared to participate in emergency response situations.
- Maintains a current and comprehensive knowledge of EHS regulations, standards, and requirements.
- Identifies new and emerging risks.
- Engages EHS and related units in regular self-audits.
- Apprises University leadership of regulatory issues and environmental health and safety risks.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Bachelor’s degree in physical, engineering, or health science, and seven years of environmental health and safety experience.
- Working knowledge of OSHA , EPA , and other EHS regulations.
- Effective analytical and organizational communication skills, including an ability to develop and deliver effective reports and presentations.
- Management experience leading work groups, strategic planning, continuous improvement, and budget planning.
- Supervisory experience including authority for personnel actions, conducting performance appraisals, managing corrective discipline required.
- Experience in managing electronic information systems desirable.
- CIH and/or CSP highly desirable.
- Experience in higher education or research setting desirable.

Anticipated Pay Range $140,000-171,000
Other Information
Special Conditions A probationary period may be required, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), Travel to and from worksites required, Background Check required for this position
