Position Description
The Utility Compliance Inspector 1 is a position located in the Cross Connections section of Metro Water Services. This position is responsible for inspecting backflow devices and documenting pertinent information.
This position is in the Target Forward Program. Employees in the Target Forward Program can automatically qualify for a job promotion and salary increase once years of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other qualifying parameters have been met.
Employees at Metro Water Services work around the clock to ensure high quality drinking water, the best in storm water management and wastewater treatment, soil and water conservation, waste and recycling for the residents of Nashville-Davidson County and some surrounding areas. It takes electricians, chemists, engineers, mechanics, information technology workers, customer service representatives, utility equipment operators and more working together to meet our resident’s needs.
Typical Duties
+ Performs annual field inspections and surveys of backflow prevention assemblies and cross-connection control systems throughout the MWS service area.
+ Conducts annual backflow inspections to ensure devices are functioning properly and in compliance with all applicable codes and TDEC regulations.
+ Verifies new and replacement installations of backflow preventers to ensure correct placement, assembly, and operation.
+ Identifies and documents various types of cross-connection or compliance issues; provides recommendations for corrective actions.
+ Completes daily inspection reports and maintains accurate records of field activities, findings, and corrective measures.
+ Communicates with property owners, contractors, and internal departments to resolve compliance concerns and provide education on regulatory requirements.
+ Collaborates with internal and external customers to promote water safety and ensure ongoing compliance with TDEC regulations and MWS standards.
+ Supports program goals and initiatives related to cross-connection control and backflow prevention through regular fieldwork and public engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of responsible inspection, investigative, water, wastewater, or stormwater infrastructure maintenance or compliance experience in support of a regulatory program or service.

TDEC Certificate of Competency for Testing and Evaluation of Backflow Prevention Assemblies

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Working knowledge of water and sewer infrastructure systems
