    Department Intern Natural History

    Position Description:

    The Museum at Texas Tech supports a full-time, 12-month position for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs in museum studies who intend to pursue careers in fields of collections management, exhibits, interpretation, and informal education. Among other strengths, this program provides practical training and experience in best practices in Natural History Collections. Graduate interns participate in all aspects of curatorial skills including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.

     

    The internship in Natural History, in addition to providing quality-learning and hands-on experiences for the intern, is vital to the Museum’s ability to provide a wide variety of curatorial and educational services.

    Major/Essential Functions:

    + Work with the Curator of Invertebrate Zoology to plan, develop, and implement a themed exhibit incorporating specimens of the Invertebrate Zoology Collection.

    + Curate and prepare specimens from the Invertebrate Zoology Collection to be incorporated into the exhibit.

    + Develop an educational unit on the same theme following the guidelines of the Office of Outreach and Engagement.

    + Assist with other institutional activities as needed.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    + Strong organizational and skills.

    + Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.

    + Background in Natural History (undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences, Biological Conservation, Natural Resources Management, or related field).

    + Ability to conceptualize, plan, and execute an exhibit based on a theme in Natural History using Invertebrate Zoology specimens.

    + Ability to properly curate (including collecting, mounting, labeling, identifying, and databasing) invertebrate specimens, particularly insects.

    + Ability to produce an educational unit following established TEKS standards.

    + Ability to work simultaneously on multiple, diverse tasks, seeking help when needed.

    + Self-motivation to achieve goals and complete projects individually and with groups.

    + Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal effectively with people of varying levels of experience and expertise.

    + Computer proficiency: Mac and PC, Office 365, knowledge of Symbiota databasing platforms is a plus but not required.
