Position Purpose:
We are seeking a Research Assistant to join our lab in the Institute for Environmental Health Sciences at Wayne State University. The lab is focused on using innovative genome-editing and live-cell imaging techniques to define cellular mechanisms responsible for maintaining genome stability and their roles in human disease.
This position is ideal for individuals who are looking to later enter medical school or pursue a PhD degree in biomedical sciences, because it affords the possibility of learning scientific techniques of various kinds, researching questions directly related to human diseases, and the ability to be primary author or co-author on scientific manuscripts. Additionally, mentorship is provided to each member of the lab through individual weekly meetings and by training lab members in various techniques.
Essential Functions:
General lab maintenance duties: Autoclaving, restocking, maintaining a clean lab, taking care of deliveries, reagent preparation for bacterial and mammalian cell culture.
Conduct scientific experiments individually as well as part of a team:
DNA extraction, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, mammalian and bacterial cell culture, transformation/transfection, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting.
Collect/analyze experimental data and maintain detailed scientific records.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Biomedical Sciences
Experience: Entry level (less than a year of job-related experience).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Strong written and verbal communications skills.
Working Conditions:
Typical work environment may include a laboratory and/or office environment.
May require working non-standard business hours including evenings and weekends.
May be required to travel to scientific conferences.
