The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (“GRC”) is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.

GRC’s Enterprise Risk Management & Risk Oversight (ERM&RO) organization is seeking a Director to join a newly created team driving Change Risk Management across American Express. This role goes beyond traditional risk governance, offering the opportunity to design and embed new change risk management processes, shape policies and standards, and build a body of knowledge that strengthens how we manage macro and micro changes across the enterprise. Success requires more than box-checking, it calls for a strategic thinker who can influence and partner with stakeholders, challenge the status quo, and help transform the way we govern risk in a dynamic, global environment.
Key Responsibilities
+ Develop, implement, and enforce an enterprise change governance and risk management framework
+ Develop and implement a methodology and process to classify change to determine required governance.
+ Develop and issue regular change governance reporting to senior leaders and/or appropriate risk committees.
+ Review and provide guidance to first line stakeholders as they develop/maintain procedures to implement the governance framework.
+ Understand relevant general laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., Heightened Standards, FFIEC, PMBOK) affecting risk management of large banks, so risk practices comply with overall regulatory frameworks and expectations.
+ Partner with senior leaders across risk, business, and technology to define risk appetite and ensure alignment with enterprise limits and thresholds.
+ Design and deliver engaging training and awareness programs for first- and second-line professionals, senior management, and the board, building organizational capability and embedding a strong culture of risk-aware transformation.
The successful candidate will have and/or be able to:
+ Deep knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and risk management standards.
+ Strong data-driven analytical skills with experience using data to identify and manage risks at scale.
+ Exceptional problem solving, communication and influencing skills, with a track record of engaging executive stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
+ 6 years of risk management experience at large U.S. banks; or risk related management consulting firms
+ Prior experience in design, development, and implementation of risk governance frameworks (Expertise in changing governance frameworks is strongly preferred).
+ Prior experience managing regulatory exams and supervisory engagements.
+ Prior experience building and leading new risk teams in dynamic environments.
Qualifications
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
