Summary The Transportation Assistant - Enrollment Coordinator is in the Business Office service line at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. The employee will independently manage the Medical Center's Beneficiary Travel Program. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to: Receive invoices for payment of transportation services. Investigate authorizations, orders, and/or review medical records. Forward all invoices certified for payment to Fiscal Service for processing. Document and prepare monthly account synopsis for contracting officials to justify yearly ambulance contractual compliance. Maintain and control filing system in accordance with VA regulations. Arrange all modes of transportation via air ambulance, commercial air, taxi, ambulance, bus, and/or independent transports. Process travel pay. Screen, process, and assist veterans, non-veterans, and beneficiaries seeking multiple medical treatments. Advise patients on National VA Enrollment, the Uniform Benefits Package, and non-medical benefits. Gathering, entering, and updating demographic, employment, insurance, and income information. Educate clinical and administrative staff in VA regulations, policies, and procedures on VA National Enrollment. Performs other duties as assigned. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/10/2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-05 (Developmental): Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization, that is directly related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties as a Transportation Assistant - Enrollment Coordinator. Qualifying specialized experience includes: preparing a variety of documents and/or reports; performing data entry into an automated system; reviewing documents for accuracy; and providing customer service to internal and external customers. OR, Education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Transcripts must be submitted at time of application. OR, Combination (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience (as described above) and education beyond the first 60 semester hours (beyond the second year), which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. Transcripts must be submitted at time of application. GS-06 (Full Performance): Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization, that is directly related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties as a Transportation Assistant - Enrollment Coordinator. Qualifying specialized experience includes: preparing a variety of documents and/or reports; performing data entry into an automated system; reviewing documents for accuracy; arranging methods of transportation; gathering insurance information for bill preparation and collection; and providing customer service to internal and external customers. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in an area responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems including psychiatric or substance abuse. Occasionally, Veterans may be angry and potentially violent. The incumbent is frequently exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions are sometimes necessary. The work requires no special physical demands, but will require some physical effort such as standing, walking, bending, and sitting. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Work Environment: The work is normally performed in an office setting with occasional visits to clinic areas and other services. The work area typically is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated although the area can be congested. Must be able to work under adverse situations and function at an optimum level of concentration in an environment with frequent interruptions and many activities in progress simultaneously. The incumbent works directly with the public, clerical and professional staff of the Medical Center. The incumbent observes established safety standards and practices as defined in the current Medical Center policy. Incumbent occasionally will attend meetings and obligations at other locations.
