We currently have an exciting full time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as Senior Instructor in our Communications Learning Center (CLC). The CLC Senior Instructor evaluates a range of communication skills, suggests, plans and provides training in methods and devices of communication, language, English reading/writing, math, college exploration, banking and budgeting, sign language, telecommunications, braille, communication in the community, etc. for the Helen Keller National Center.
This is an in-person position based out of our training center in Sands Point, NY. The regular hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3:45pm EST.
Starting Pay Rate: $39.4101/ hour, $71,726.3201 annualized.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
+ Ensures services provided to students are person-centered and meet the students’ needs:
+ Assess, through dialogue with the student and team as well as functional, individualized assessment activities, the student’s training priorities. May also administer, score and interpret standardized tests.
+ Actively collaborate with team (including student) to design trans-disciplinary training activities, implement individualized program and evaluate progress through debriefing and further dialogue to identify further learning opportunities.
+ Communicates to all team members the student’s training priorities/ short and long term goals.
+ Ensures the student’s involvement in decision making process with team throughout evaluation and training.
+ As a senior instructor, provides guidance and feedback to the CLC instructor supporting student training.
+ Actively participates in Community of Practice (COP) of choice to support learning of peers, contribute articles, experiences and challenges.
+ Investigates and evaluates new trends in teaching methods, teaching aids, and new devices, and recommends the development of improved services.
+ Recommends appropriate materials and equipment.
+ Participates in departmental meetings, scheduled inter-departmental team meetings and general staff meetings, to understand the unique needs and program of each student, and plans a team approach for providing a transdisciplinary approach to training.
+ Accompanies and serves as a guide and/or facilitates communication for students and professional staff members when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion.
+ Takes daily documentation of student progress.
+ Submits scheduled written reports based upon above documentation and recommends areas for further training.
+ Has responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
+ Performs work related duties, when necessary, at the discretion of the Supervisor and/or Administration.
Education and/or EXPERIENCE
+ Education: Master’s degree in Special education, Deaf education, Education of the Visually Impaired, Rehabilitation Teaching, or Communication Disorders.
+ Experience: Two years of experience in teaching - preferably, to DeafBlind, blind, deaf, or severely handicapped individuals.
+ Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of braille are strongly preferred.
+ Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook).
+ Excellent communication and organizational skills.
