POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE

The Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking to hire a Post Doctoral Associate to work with Dr Graham Dove and Dr Takahiro Yabe developing and implementing protocols for understanding and mitigating community concerns around trust and transparency in smart cities through generating appropriate ideas for data generation and use. The project’s focus is a new smart city development in Vietnam, and the project will require travel.

The Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) at NYU Tandon is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to the application of science, technology, engineering, math, and social sciences in service of urban communities across the globe.
Expectations
Candidates will be responsible for:
+ helping to build and maintain a network of local collaborators in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (e.g., researchers, practitioners, community-based organizations, and municipal officials);
+ developing and implementing a framework for collaborative workshops and focus groups to identify site-specific concerns and translate principles from prior work in other locations and contexts;
+ coordinating with faculty contacts in NYC to arrange knowledge sharing with Vietnamese project partners;
+ conducting case study research on the design and implementation of the project;
+ collaborating with a team of faculty and external partners, including visits and workshops in Ho Chi Minh City; and
+ performing other research related tasks as required.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in: (1) digital civics and public interest technology research, as it relates to smart city technologies and open data platforms; (2) planning, conducting, and analyzing participatory workshops and co-design activities; and (3) community and civic engagement and working with local government and community-based organizations, especially in urban contexts; as exemplified by a strong publication record. Previous experience on cross-cultural collaborations, working across languages, geographies, and institutional settings, and in project managing multi-stakeholder research or policy projects with timelines and deliverables is desired. Vietnamese language skills are helpful but not required.
Salary range
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $62,500 - 65,000 depending on the candidate’s experience and qualification.
Candidates must have a PhD in urban planning, human-computer interaction, design, information science, urban science or a related field. We welcome applicants with recent PhDs and individuals seeking additional postdoctoral training. Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.
