    Job Description

    UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.

     

    Transportation Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Utility Worker 2 to perform semi-skilled work and manual labor in constructing, maintaining, repairing, and operating Transportation facilities, grounds, and equipment; perform custodial duties; and set-up and tear-down signs and barricades.

     

    This position will report to and work under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager in the Transportation Maintenance Work Unit. This position performs outdoor semi-skilled construction, maintenance, repair and custodial duties for all Transportation owned facilities, grounds, and equipment.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    + Perform semi-skilled maintenance and construction work on Transportation parking garage, surface lots, and grounds such as road work and lot maintenance including patching asphalt, filling and repairing concrete curbs, garage roll up doors, installing signage, painting, and replacing fixtures.

    + Operate motorized equipment including dump trucks, forklifts, small tractors and front-end loaders, street cleaning equipment, sweepers, scrubbers, trailers, pressure washers, and turf renovation equipment.

    + Operate automobiles, trucks, and vans to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.

    + Perform custodial duties to keep transportation facilities clean.

    + Work includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, polishing, trash collection, leaf blowing, graffiti removal, snow removal, gutter cleaning, vacuuming, and other related custodial functions.

    + Troubleshoot and repair parking equipment gate arm and pay station maintenance issues, restock printer paper in parking machines.

    + Use power equipment and hand tools required for cleaning, weeding, and maintenance of campus parking facilities; and use of university approved industrial cleaners to remove graffiti or infectious waste products.

    + Clean, service, adjust, and make repairs on tools and equipment; such as electric and gas engine driven compressors, large mowers, pneumatic tamper, jackhammer, snowplows, grounds equipment, sweeper/scrubber machine, bike station equipment, and portable pumps.

    + Load and unload trucks and move furniture, equipment, supplies and materials; and may assemble new furniture.

    + Assist the Assistant Manager with layout and job planning on routine maintenance or minor construction projects for parking facilities.

    + Set up signs, cones, and barricades as directed to support daily parking operations.

    + Assist in traffic control in parking lots, including putting gate arms up and down, setting signage, placing traffic cones and delineators.

    + Move and store supplies and equipment as needed.

    + Observe, assess, record and report hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions in parking areas/structures.

    + Provide professional and friendly customer service to UW employees and visitors.

    + Perform duties of Utility Worker 1.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience

    Required

    + Physical strength to do required work AND one year of work experience which includes operation of power equipment such as tampers, jackhammers, trucks, and wheel tractors.

     

    Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

    Desired

    + Knowledge of the current Transportation Services programs, products, services and systems at the University of Washington.

    + Experience in using email communication and navigating in the Windows PC environment.

    Conditions of employment

    + Must be polite and diplomatic at all times within a diverse population.

    + Ability to move / lift 50 pounds.

    + Must be available to work a varied shift to support Transportation demands and events, including overtime and weekends.

    + Must be able to work independently with only general supervision; complete work assignments according to work order.

    + Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, including adverse weather conditions; works and operates equipment outside in clement and inclement weather.

    + Frequent bending, lifting, turning, kneeling, reaching and executing other similar physical tasks.

    + Must be able to work in enclosed parking areas in extreme temperatures and in the presence dirt, dust, exhaust fumes and/or loud noises.

    + This position is designated as one that performs an essential function. This means that the position's incumbent must continue to report to work in the event that the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster, or other emergency condition unless otherwise notified

    + Approved footwear conforming to ASTM F2413 must be worn while performing all field work. The employer shall provide a maximum of $200 reimbursement annually.

    + Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job. Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.

    + Regular and predictable attendance is required.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $44,256.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $54,732.00 annual
