    Job Summary

    We are looking for a Program Manager to lead our e-HAIL community. The e-HAIL Program Manager is a strategic, task-oriented individual responsible for uniting medical and engineering researchers to grow a community for developing proof-of-concept research in preparation for submitting grant proposals. The Program Manager will identify and share funding opportunities with e-HAIL members and the larger U-M AI and Health community; provide forums for peer reviews; and host brainstorming activities prior to proposal submissions. Understanding the unique cultures of the engineering and medical schools is integral to this role as is close collaboration with U-M's AI & Digital Health Innovation (AIDHI) initiative. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator with a proven track record of working with faculty researchers, and is a self-starter with a strong sense of ownership and initiative.

    About e-HAIL and AI & Digital Health Innovation

     

    AI & Digital Health Innovation represents a unification of interdisciplinary efforts at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and health at the University of Michigan. We leverage community partners to provide forums for sharing digital and health AI research ideas, foster innovation, and strengthen proposal development initiatives. Our e-HAIL (E-Health and Artificial Intelligence) Community is a supportive community of researchers that interacts regularly through online brainstorming sessions and in-person workshops, primarily focused on helping engineering and medical faculty prepare proposals for grant submissions.

    Responsibilities*

    Community building

    + Propose, plan and provide administrative support for community-building opportunities, including biweekly seminar series, annual symposium, in-person workshops/discussions, and other meetings and events

    + Foster community-building across campus to build interdisciplinary teams of faculty to develop large grant proposals for research projects in AI and healthcare through NIH, NSF and other grant mechanisms

    + Proactively identify potential new members and collaborators across the College of Engineering (CoE) the Medical school (MM), and other schools and colleges, ensuring balanced membership

    + In partnership with AIDHI staff/leadership, present at U-M and MM symposia, events, faculty meetings, 1:1 consultations with new faculty, and other avenues to create awareness of e-HAIL and other AHDI support services

    + Partner with marketing and communication specialists to promote and increase the visibility of e-HAIL (newsletter and website)

    + Maintain e-HAIL membership list and gain familiarity with member research interests

    Research development and documentation

    + Proactively identify potential funding opportunities, share with e-HAIL membership and leadership, and keep database of funding opportunities up to date;

    + Maintain database of all awarded funding opportunities including the e-HAIL support each project received;

    + Facilitate annual student support and dataset creation award programs (set up competition, secure reviewers, communicate with awardees and departments, annual follow up survey, documentation of resulting grant applications and awards);

    + Reconcile monthly expenses for student support and dataset creation projects;

    + Partner with FFMI business development, CoE CFIR, and other relevant units to strengthen industry partnerships;

    + Review and strengthen monitoring and evaluation activities to align with best practices and integration with AIDHI processes where relevant;

    + Maintain documentation of convener meetings, track action items and decisions made, and generate all necessary follow-up correspondence to ensure work is completed.

    Strategic Planning

    + Provide 'big picture' leadership for e-HAIL in collaboration with e-HAIL and AIDHI leaders to help determine priorities and successfully achieve milestones;

    + Provide support for publications and conference presentations related to research activities;

    + Engage effectively with customers, triaging inquiries, identifying resources, and partnering with staff across U-M and MM as necessary to meet unit objectives;

    + Manage correspondence and communication (verbal, written, and e-mail) using independent judgment, and requiring a high degree of discretion and professionalism.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in a relevant field

    + 3-5 years' experience with program planning and administration

    + Experience with funding agencies (NIH, NSF, other federal agencies, foundations)

    + Strong communication skills, with excellent people skills and commitment to collaboration and partnership

    + Task-oriented with effective, autonomous, and efficient performance of the daily responsibilities needed to execute and achieve goals

    + Ability to effectively build and maintain successful working relationships and act as a liaison to U-M faculty, administrators, and other e-HAIL stakeholders

    + Excellent skills in the management, organization, and analysis of data

    + Proven ability to facilitate and lead meetings

    + Fluency in use of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint or similar applications

    + Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Master's degree or PhD in relevant field

    + Experience with integrated research programs that cross disciplinary lines

    + Experience working with faculty in AI or Data Science

    + Understanding of the University of Michigan organizational structure, research activities, and culture, including in schools such as College of Engineering or Michigan Medicine

    + Working knowledge of the University policies and procedures and proficiency with University or ability to quickly learn new systems

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
