    About the School and Pittsburgh

Carnegie Mellon, home to 10 colleges, is a top-tier, internationally recognized research university that ranks among the world's most renowned educational institutions. Carnegie Mellon Architecture is one of the United States’ top-ranked architecture programs, with a student body totaling 450 undergraduate and graduate students. It is situated within Carnegie Mellon’s College of Fine Arts, alongside the Schools of Art, Design, Drama and Music. Embedded within one of the world’s foremost technical research institutions, the school offers a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities, intensified by a university culture of research excellence, interdisciplinary exploration, and creative inquiry. The three graduate research focus areas within the school contribute to its mission of cultivating architectural and design excellence through rigorous training in fundamentals and the development of unique, multidisciplinary expertise that draws from engineering, the sciences, and the humanities. CMU is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home to universities and world-class healthcare, arts, and cultural institutions. Pittsburgh has become increasingly recognized as a hub of tech-based business and livability.

CM-A is focused on a critical examination of architectural education in the 21st century. Our pedagogies are a framework through which we are experimenting and developing new design directives to better prepare our students to address the three imminent challenges (https://www.architecture.cmu.edu/school/mission) facing society. Focused on design fundamentals, design research and design ethics, these pedagogies are implemented across all our programs. The school welcomes applications that can engage one or more of these pedagogies and contribute to the discussions happening at the school. As part of one of the world’s leading research institutions at the interdisciplinary intersection of technology, the arts and the humanities, a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities exist at the school, college and university. If your creative work is breaking new ground, you will find an encouraging, stimulating environment to support your explorations.

The school is a team of dedicated educators, designers, researchers, practitioners and interdisciplinary collaborators. Our philosophy is to provide deep immersion in the discipline of architecture across our B. Arch, M. Arch and post-professional master’s and doctoral programs, intensified by a university culture of interdisciplinary innovation and creative inquiry. Our programs take advantage of specialized facilities and centers like the Robert L. Preger Intelligent Workplace, Design Fabrication Lab (dFAB), Code Lab, Remaking Cities Institute, and the IDeATe Physical Computing Lab. Our location in the dynamic, post-industrial city of Pittsburgh provides us a unique urban context for inquiry and action.
