    Description

    Amazon is seeking a Systems Development Engineer with strong design and development skills to join our Checkout Engineering team in Austin, TX. This role will focus on creating advanced tooling to support our Point of Sale (POS) and Payments systems using Amazon development processes.

     

    The ideal candidate will drive both the strategic vision and technical implementation of robust, scalable solutions. You will influence architectural decisions, design and implement implementation strategies, and own engineering best practices. A portion of your work will involve developing custom tools and frameworks to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and maintainability of our payment and POS systems.

     

    Key job responsibilities

     

    - Lead technical design discussions that impact payment and POS systems.

     

    - Build custom tools and frameworks to support payment and POS systems.

     

    - Implement critical components of payment and POS systems.

     

    - Create design specifications for complex integration between Checkout systems, internal boundary systems, and vendor systems.

     

    - Build tools for automated monitoring solutions.

     

    - Build automated alerting systems based on log analysis, with the ability to identify both present and absent critical data elements.

     

    - Collaborate with SDE teams to implement monitoring solutions for new features and services.

     

    - Document tool implementations and framework designs to enable team adoption and maintenance.

     

    - Troubleshoot issues and collaborate with vendors and cross-functional teams.

     

    A day in the life

     

    - Enhance existing frameworks to improve system observability and operational efficiency across Worldwide Grocery Stores (WWGS) stores.

     

    - Build custom dashboards and alerts using Amazon's internal monitoring stack to track system health metrics.

     

    - Implement and maintain automation scripts for routine operational tasks and system maintenance.

     

    - Write and optimize logging frameworks to improve troubleshooting capabilities and system visibility.

     

    - Analyze and optimize system performance through improved tooling and automated health checks.

     

    - Participate in standups including support retrospectives and design reviews for new architecture solutions.

    About the team

    We are responsible for in-store payment and POS systems across all WFM locations (US, Canada, and UK). We collaborate with payment providers, POS vendors, and internal teams across WFM and Amazon to enable new features, improve performance and uptime, and resolve critical break/fix issue. Our mission is to deliver reliable, secure payment solutions and POS operations that power over a million in-store transactions daily.

    Basic Qualifications

    - Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure

     

    - Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust

     

    - Experience with Linux/Unix

     

    - Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes

     

    - Experience with Point of Sale, Payments, or Retail technologies

    Preferred Qualifications

    - Experience with distributed systems at scale

     

    - 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

     

    - 3+ years in Point of Sale, Payments, or Retail technology

    Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
