    ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER JOB DESCRIPTION

    Pharmacy Supervisor

     

    Pharmacy Department

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for providing and overseeing a full range of pharmaceutical care services. Working as part of the patient care team, supervisor manages and supervises the day to day operational and personnel of the Pharmacy Department. The Pharmacy Supervisor reports to the Pharmacy Directors. Work schedule is determined by the Pharmacy Directors.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Include but are not limited to the following:

    + Assumes responsibilities for coordinating and supervising one or more areas or functions of the department when needed:

    + Shared oversight of inpatient operations

    + Direct oversight and responsibility for hospital ADM’s and related automation

    + Direct oversight of all/anything related to controlled substance

    + Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care

    + Actively promote medication safety

    + Promote rational cost effective use of medications

    + Provide pharmaceutical care to all types and ages of patients cared for at AMC.

    + Effectively performs medication order and drug therapy review leading to improved patient outcomes

    + Prepare and dispense medications

    + Provide drug information

    + Monitor patient drug therapy

    + Collaborate with other caregivers, the patient and significant others to optimize pharmaceutical care

    + Supervise and direct support personnel

    + Participate in training and development of staff

    + Provide professional services and when needed, leadership, to the Department, Center and Community

    + Routinely work with management and others to improve pharmaceutical care and services.

    + In the absence of a supervisor, can assume essential responsibilities and functions of pharmacy supervisor/manager for limited periods of time.

    + Assist in the continued advancement of pharmaceutical care services.

    + Willingly provide any and all appropriate functions as a recognized expert and leader.

    + Supervise assigned areas of the Department

    + Participate in the hiring of new staff

    + Conduct performance evaluations

    + Develop policies and procedures

    + Assure that assigned areas function within all legal and professional standards

    + Oversee and coordinate training of staff

    + Oversee and coordinate ongoing competency programs

    + Provide day-to-day support for staff

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    + Demonstrated extensive knowledge in one or more areas of pharmacy practice.

    + Applies skills and knowledge to improve overall quality of pharmaceutical care within organizational.

    + Demonstrates ability to develop a leadership role in providing pharmaceutical care.

    + Applies skills and knowledge to improve overall quality of pharmaceutical care within organizational.

    + Developing as a department role model through dedication to the highest standards of professionalism.

    + Meets or exceeds all qualifications for Staff Pharmacist I, II and III listed above

    + Demonstrates outstanding ongoing leadership in providing pharmaceutical care.

    + Demonstrates excellent management skills of both professionals and non-professionals.

    + Ability to effectively supervise professional and non-professional staff.

    EDUCATION, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION AND/OR CERTIFICATION

    REQUIREMENTS:

     

    Current NYS Pharmacy License.

    EXPERIENCE:

    5 years experience in health system pharmacy practice preferred.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

    Ability to comprehend complex verbal and written materials.

     

    Ability to communicate complex ideas and materials both verbally and in writing.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to perform standard and complex pharmaceutical calculations.

    + Work cooperatively within Department and Medical Center

    + Work independently

    + Work effectively and safely in complex and constantly changing environment.

    + Actively participate in promoting a safe and enjoyable work environment

    gather data from appropriate resources.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use

     

    hands to probe, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and speak

     

    and hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, and occasionally to stoop, kneel, or crouch.

     

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities

     

    required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and

     

    the ability to adjust focus.

     

    + May be required to stand for prolonged periods of time

    + May require prolonged sitting while working on computer

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    The work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Multiple hospital environments- Pharmacy, patient care units, treatment areas and operating room

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be subject to infectious materials and

     

    chemicals (see unit specific MSDS information).

     

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

     

    This job requires as an essential function that the employee be physically

     

    on-site as the work cannot be done from a remote location.
