STEP is a New York State Education Program that provides academic support services and enrichment activities to students in grade 7-12 who show interest and aptitude in STEM or licensed professions. STEP students acquire the skills necessary for successful entry into college and science, engineering, technology, health-related fields and licensed professions.
STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7-12 for entry into college-level programs in Science, Engineering, Technology, Health Sciences and licensed professions.
The academic programs offered by STEP include lab-based instruction in such areas as Mathematics, Biosciences, Physical Sciences, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Computer Programming and applications, Robotics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technologies, Aviation Management Technology and written communication. The enrichment programs of STEP include college-level courses, in-school tutorials in mathematics and sciences, team work and leadership development opportunities as well as hands-on projects in science and engineering technologies. The support services offered by STEP include academic counseling and advising, college entry test preparation, arrangements for summer internships, field trips to industry sites and academic institutions and opportunities for participation in regional conferences.
The Faculty Research Mentor will guide and support high school students participating in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at Farmingdale State College. The mentor will provide hands-on research training, foster academic growth, and help students develop essential skills for success in STEM and health-related fields.
Responsibilities:
+ Meet regularly with assigned students throughout the research period (semester, summer, or full academic year).
+ Teach students essential laboratory and/or research skills relevant to their field of study.
+ Enhance students' understanding of specific disciplines and research methodologies.
+ Encourage students to develop and refine their own research ideas, techniques, and critical thinking skills.
+ Facilitate student presentations of their research at conferences, symposiums, and competitions.
+ Maintain regular communication with STEP staff regarding student progress, challenges, and accomplishments.
+ Ensure compliance with all institutional safety and research integrity standards.
Research mentor work schedules are flexible, based on both student and mentor availability throughout the academic year.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Master's degree required; Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience preferred.
+ Previous experience mentoring or teaching students in research or STEM disciplines.
+ Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
+ Commitment to supporting underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in STEM fields.
Additional Information:
This is a part-time Research Foundation position.
