Job Summary and Qualifications
The Consulting Application Engineer is skilled in Consulting Oracle PL/SQL applications and leads backend development and performance optimization efforts across mission-critical systems. This role requires deep expertise in Oracle PL/SQL programming, query and system performance tuning, and database architecture. The Consulting Application Engineer will have strong experience enhancing large-scale systems, debugging complex database issues, and optionally supporting or integrating with ETL pipelines.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Database Performance Tuning
Analyze and optimize existing PL/SQL code, stored procedures, and queries.
Identify slow-running SQL statements and improve performance using execution plans, indexes, hints, and restructuring logic.
Work with DBAs to improve instance-level performance (e.g., memory, I/O, CPU bottlenecks).
Recommend partitioning, materialized views, and caching where applicable.
High-Quality PL/SQL Development
Design, develop, and maintain complex PL/SQL packages, triggers, procedures, and functions for business-critical applications.
Implement best practices for modular, reusable, and well-documented code.
Collaborate with application developers for seamless integration of business logic into applications.
System Architecture & Design
Participate in technical design and architecture discussions across systems that rely heavily on Oracle backend.
Lead design and review of database schema, normalization strategies, indexing approaches, and data flow models.
Ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability of data processes and code.
Code Reviews & Mentorship
Review PL/SQL and database code written by others to ensure performance and standards compliance.
Provide mentoring and guidance to junior and mid-level developers.
Set coding standards, naming conventions, and performance benchmarks.
Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
Investigate critical production issues involving data integrity or performance degradation.
Trace application bottlenecks to Oracle DB code and resolve them quickly.
Work across multiple environments (DEV, UAT, PROD) to replicate and resolve issues.
ETL Design and Data Integration
Collaborate with data engineering or ETL teams to ensure smooth data pipelines and transformations.
Optimize PL/SQL code used in ETL batch jobs to handle large datasets efficiently.
(Optional but valuable) Work with tools like DM Express, Oracle Goldengate, IBM Streamset or custom ETL processes written in PL/SQL or Shell.
Collaboration & Leadership
Coordinate across teams including application developers, DBAs, business analysts, QA, and project managers.
Take ownership of technical delivery in large initiatives involving Oracle backend systems.
Present technical designs and performance findings to leadership.
Tools & Technologies
Oracle 19c or later
SQL*Plus, TOAD, SQL Developer
AWR, ADDM, TKPROF, SQL Trace
ETL tools (DM Express, Streamset, Goldengate or PL/SQL ETL scripts)
Version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins or similar)
What qualifications you will need:
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science – Required
EXPERIENCE
7 or more years of experience in developing Oracle PL/SQL - Required
Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience could be considered
Other Skills & Experience
Deep understanding of Oracle execution plans, query optimization, and index strategy.
Proficiency in debugging performance issues in high-throughput environments.
Experience with database design for large-scale systems.
Prior experience leading small to medium technical teams is a plus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Oracle Database PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional - Preferred
