Summary The inpatient pharmacy supervisor is a licensed pharmacist, preferably with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Primary responsibility is providing supervision, professional and administrative leadership and guidance to Inpatient Section of Pharmacy Service. Incumbent is responsible for procuring, dispensing, and maintaining proper records of all pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances and ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards. Reports to Associate Chief of Inpatient Pharmacy Responsibilities The inpatient pharmacy supervisor is a licensed pharmacist, preferably with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The incumbent has responsibilities as a clinical pharmacy specialist that include but are not limited to; reviewing, interpreting, and verifying medication orders for appropriateness processing and filling medication orders; interacting with and making recommendations to other clinical staff regarding medication therapy ordered to ensure safe and effective care reviewing the patient's medications, allergies, labs, and other pertinent information from the medical record to identify and solve medication related problems; contacting providers as appropriate, documenting recommendations and interventions; providing refill extensions and partial medication supplies, taking health and medication histories; performing medication reconciliation; providing drug information, assisting in formulary management including therapeutic substitutions, non-formulary reviews and medication usage evaluations; documenting and assessing adverse drug events (ADEs). Assisting in medical emergencies; providing oversight of technical staff in all aspects of medication distribution. Administrative responsibilities include the management of multiple programs, including the inpatient distributive program, and support of the pharmacy-controlled substance program. The incumbent will manage the day-to-day operations of the Inpatient Pharmacy; the incumbent will be responsible for the provision of inpatient pharmaceutical services and products. This includes procuring, dispensing, and maintaining proper records of all pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances and ensuring compliance of these programs with Joint Commission standards. The incumbent will maintain effective relationships with all service chiefs, supervisors, employees, and other hospital staff so that minimal higher-level management interventions are required. Provides freely and willingly, and necessary technical knowledge and assistance as required. Help promote and support the team approach. The inpatient pharmacy supervisor position includes the following functions, but other assignments and projects will be assigned as needed. Manages the Inpatient Distributive Pharmacy Section program to ensure medications are dispensed in a safe and efficient manner. Ensures inpatient orders are processed in a timely manner consistent with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, VA requirements, and federal and state laws impacting on Pharmacy Service. Responsible for coordinating use of automated medication dispensing equipment. Ensures optimal utilization of Pyxis, TCGRX, and other inpatient automation, including coordination with nursing service as needed. Ensures maintenance of inpatient ordering and dispensing records in accordance with all applicable laws and standards. Responsible for oversight of IV compounding program. Ensures safe preparation and delivery of compounded sterile products, unit dose and bulk medications and hazardous compounds as outlined in USP 797 and USP 80 Responsible for assignment of work of the staff. Advises and supports Pharmacy Leadership in planning department's resource needs of the Inpatient Pharmacy Ensures all aspects of drug control, drug accountability and drug security are maximized and comply with medical center and Pharmacy Service policy and procedures and other applicable professional, State, and Federal regulations. Contributes to the development and implementation of ongoing quality improvement plans for monitoring the outcome of direct patient care activities. Reviews and evaluates requests for non-formulary and restricted drugs for appropriateness and compliance with established criteria where applicable. f) Functions independently under scope of practice as defined by the medical center. Develops and maintains written policies and procedures governing safe dispensing of medications Has oversight for the training and practice of trainees in the inpatient pharmacy including residents, students, and volunteers. Appraises performance, assesses competency, and provides ongoing staff development for employees. Ensures all inpatient pharmacy personnel mandatory training and certification is maintained and completed Develops goals, position descriptions, functional statements, and performance standards for those employees under their direct supervision Develops, establishes, and maintains written policies and procedures defining operational requirements. Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Licensure. Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. At the GS-12 grade level, the clinical pharmacist handles routine medication-related activities in accordance with local, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and national policies and regulations. These include, but are not limited to: reviewing, interpreting, and verifying medication orders for appropriateness; processing and filling medication orders; interacting with and making recommendations to other clinical staff regarding medication therapy ordered to ensure safe and effective care; reviewing the patient's medications, allergies, labs, and other pertinent information from the medical record to identify and solve medication-related problems; contacting providers as appropriate; documenting recommendations and interventions; providing refill extensions and partial medication supplies; taking health and medication histories; performing medication reconciliation; providing drug information; assisting in formulary management including therapeutic substitutions, nonformulary reviews and medication usage evaluations; documenting and assessing adverse drug events (ADEs); assisting in medical emergencies; providing oversight of technical staff in all aspects of medication distribution. Pharmacists at the GS-12 level must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of professional pharmacy practice. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to both patients and health care staff. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to the distribution and control of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs and pharmacy security. Skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy. Skill in managing people or programs. Preferred Experience: PGY1 Residency and/or 1 year of clinical pharmacy experience can be listed as the preferred experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing/sitting for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., and bending/stooping. The work may entail repetitive wrist movement while using various size syringes, vial cap removal, and typing.
