    Summary

    The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of company owned equipment. Using both company and industry standards, this role ensures all equipment is safe and road ready. This position involves inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing hydraulic and electrical systems, hydraulic steering systems, multi-axle alignments, chassis electrical, and air brake systems. The position also requires intermediate welding and fabrication work as needed.

     

    Education and Experience

     

    + A degree/diploma from an accredited Heavy Equipment and/or Diesel Technician program. Or 5+ years of equivalent experience working with heavy/medium duty diesel heavy equipment validated through the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) Foundation Technical Pre-Assessment with a passing overall score of =>65%. And must obtain AED Industry Certified Technician assessment with a passing overall score of =>70% within 1 year of hire date.

    + ASE Certifications T4 - Brakes, T5 - Suspensions & Steering, T6 - Electrical/Electronic Systems, and T8 – Preventative Maintenance Inspections is required within 1 year of hire date.

    + 5+ years intermediate skills in cutting and welding is required.

    + Possesses excellent working knowledge of various types of fluid power systems. Skilled in replacing or rebuilding hydraulic pumps, valves, hoses and cylinders, including measuring cylinder tolerances and checking for scoring, pitting or warping. Capable of pressure testing rebuilt cylinders to ensure proper operation and a leak-free performance.

    + Able to interpret hydraulic schematics and troubleshoot complex fluid power systems, performing pressure testing and flow diagnostics using specialized tools and gauges.

    + Demonstrate advanced knowledge in electric-over-hydraulic systems, with the ability to diagnose and repair electric-over-hydraulic steering systems, including sensors, actuators, and control modules.

    + Experience troubleshooting electrical faults related to steering circuits and sensors with the ability to calibrate and test electronic steering components. Capable of performing all necessary repairs and make the system fully operational.

    + Skilled in fabrication of structural components through cutting, grinding, welding, and fitting techniques using plasma cutters, brake presses, shears, and other fabrication equipment safely and efficiently.

    + Proficient in executing MIG and Stick welding on mild steel and aluminum components ensuring welds meet structural integrity and appearance standards through visual inspection and non-destructive testing.

    + Experienced in repairing cracked or damaged welds and reinforcing high-stress areas on trailers, frames, and heavy equipment.

    + Demonstrated experience in performing advanced diagnostics on lighting systems and ABS systems including wheel speed sensors, modulators, ECU communication and electrical harnesses for all general lighting circuits.

    + Proven ability to use OEM diagnostic tools and software to identify fault codes and perform system resets or calibrations.

    + Valid driver’s license required, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.

    + Ability to operate all related shop equipment.

    + Dot and Forklift certification is preferred; must be able to obtain certification within one year.

    + Excellent communications skills (written, verbal, listening). Able to communicate effectively with drivers to gather detailed information and understand the root cause of equipment issues, ensuring accurate diagnostic and timely repairs.

    + Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).

    + Basis knowledge in using computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.

    + Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

    + Ability to perform diagnostics to identify mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment using specialized tools and diagnostic software to ensure accurate and efficient repairs.

    + Demonstrated ability to consistently and successfully submit warranty claims and model proper completion of procedures. Follows through with successful repairs, part documentation and data collection.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Possess diagnostic capabilities on hydraulic and electrical steer systems on the equipment.

    + Weld steel/aluminum to repair parts or fabricate replacement parts.

    + Repair and maintain various hydraulic and electrical steer systems.

    + Ability to understand operator concerns and help develop repair plans.

    + Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems. Determine the most effective and efficient method for repair.

    + Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.

    + Remain technically proficient in all areas of equipment maintenance.

    + Ensure safety procedures are implemented, followed, and PPE is always used.

    + Be a positive role model for all team members providing support and enthusiasm – creating a professional, positive work environment.

    + Move tractors and equipment in and out of the shop for maintenance safely.

    + Participate in online OEM training.

    + Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.

    + Meet HEM standard time rating (88+%)

    + Meet HEM frequency (< or = 2 per year)

    + Meet HEM Quality Assurance Performance (90+%)

    + Performs shop clean-up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

    + Must furnish basic tools. ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.

    + Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.

    + Required to work occasional overtime, Saturdays and other shift vacancies as needed.

    + Inspects and performs all minor to complex trailer maintenance including welding, tire replacement, pressure checks, brakes, lights, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.

    + Works within budget that is set for the department.

    + Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

    + Complete DOT inspections on outgoing equipment to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.

    + Perform inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned equipment using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.

    + Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    + Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.

    + Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Specific Job-Related Tasks and Capabilities:

    + Possess knowledge of Hydraulic systems and wireless steer systems. Diagnose and repair these systems on both Tridec and Lodar using resources posted on the intranet or schematics.

    + Proficient in the use of torch cutting, welding, and plasma cutting equipment, with the ability to weld both mild steel and aluminum to a high standard. Capable of independently welding a wide range of equipment components, including structural areas, while consistently meeting quality repair standard.

    + Proficient in rebuilding full Tridec steer systems and replacing all bushings and bearings can document and train others to do this following an SOP.

    + Tear down and rebuild Booster Pivot bearings, Hatbox bearings, fifth goosenecks and large Heavy Yellow repairs with some guidance.

    + Skills and knowledge to work on all equipment such as 3 axle RGN’s, 4 Axle RGN’s, Blades, Multi Axle, Perimeters and Schnable’s.

    + Possesses skills and knowledge to perform comprehensive repairs on small gas engines and accurately diagnose hydraulic systems on multi-axle and blade equipment.

    + Install and take out deck sections and beam sections upon request. Can convert multi axle equipment into steerable equipment upon request.

    + Perform accident damage repairs including full rear end replacements, axle and boogie box swaps, side-rail and cross member repairs and up to Multi Axle and Schnabel equipment.

    + Knowledge of the equipment air systems. Be able to diagnose and make repairs and re-plumb equipment air systems. Can train others in this area as well.

    + Demonstrate superior IDRIVE values. Adheres to company expectations and policies.

    + Ability and knowledge of the ABS systems and how to TS and repair various issues within them. Understands all aspects of the ABS software systems for diagnostics independently.

    + Demonstrated ability and understanding of lighting systems. Can diagnose all lighting wiring issues independently and make the repairs to ATS and DOT standards.

    + Perform PM / DOT inspections and be fully capable of finding all needed repairs on the equipment to bring it to ATS and DOT standards.

    + Understanding of the VM Task system and possess an understanding of building a repair plan for each piece of equipment that you work on by using appropriate Standard Jobs for the repairs needed.

    + A hands-on mentor and train for up to 90 days with new hires, either on ATS way and computer system or hands on training and coaching. Will be able to work and train on all pieces of equipment ATS owns.

    + CCC- Will have advanced written and communication skills and can write tech stories that are easy to read and have all the proper information based upon the task at hand.

    + Demonstrates all Warranty and Safety SOP’s will be followed as well as all other documented SOPs posted on the ATS intranet.

    + Brake inspection certified. Demonstrate an understanding on how to replace brakes, wheel seals, S-Cams, Chambers. Will have performed brake, wheel seal, S-Cam. replacement on various equipment and can perform this procedure independently and done to ATS and DOT specs.

    + Tire Certified with an understanding of the tire program, consistently demonstrated through day-to-day performance on the shop floor.

    + Intermittently communicate with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.

    Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

    + From 1 to 10 lbs. frequently

    + From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally

    + Over 50 lbs. occasionally

    Exposure to:

    + Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.

    + Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.

    + Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.

    + Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.

     

    Hourly Positions w/differential pay

    Compensation & Benefits:

    • The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $35.00 - $44.00 plus $4/hr. 2nd shift differential. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
