Position Summary
Thompson Engineering is seeking a Senior Hydraulic Engineer with extensive North Carolina project experience to join our advisory team. The selected candidate will provide expert-level guidance on hydraulic and stormwater modeling, regulatory compliance, and technical process improvement. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor-supporting both internal teams and clients through review, evaluation, and enhancement of hydraulic design practices and standards.
The ideal candidate will bring advanced proficiency in HEC-RAS, CLOMR/LOMR preparation, stormwater design and analysis, and FERC/FEMA permitting. This position offers the opportunity to influence organizational practices, mentor staff, and play a key role in advancing technical excellence across our hydraulic and water resources services.
Key Responsibilities
+ Lead the review and evaluation of complex hydraulic analyses, stormwater management systems, and drainage infrastructure designs.
+ Provide high-level technical guidance on HEC-RAS modeling, CLOMR/LOMR submittals, and related FEMA and FERC regulatory processes.
+ Develop and recommend process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency in hydraulic design workflows.
+ Review, refine, and advise on hydraulic design criteria, technical guidelines, and standard operating procedures.
+ Serve as a subject matter expert to internal teams, clients, and regulatory partners regarding hydrologic and hydraulic methodologies.
+ Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure projects meet design intent, regulatory requirements, and best practice standards.
+ Mentor junior engineers and support professional development initiatives within the Water Resources group.
+ Represent Thompson Engineering in technical meetings, client discussions, and professional forums as needed.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (Master's degree preferred).
+ Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license; North Carolina registration required or ability to obtain within six months.
+ Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in hydraulic and stormwater engineering, with demonstrated experience in North Carolina regulatory environments.
+ Advanced technical proficiency in HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, FEMA mapping and permitting processes, and stormwater design modeling.
+ In-depth understanding of FERC and FEMA permitting requirements and submittal processes.
+ Proven ability to interpret, evaluate, and enhance engineering design standards and workflows.
+ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical memoranda, reports, and review summaries.
+ Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and deadlines.
+ Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, and client relationship-building capabilities.
