    Job Title: Dean of Students

    Job Summary:

Henry Ford Academy is seeking a full-time Dean of Students to join our dedicated team of educators. Our Dean helps students navigate their personal and social development—assisting with school-day management and student oversight, attendance initiatives, conflict resolution and related challenges that may hinder student success. The Dean creates programs and groups to support student needs and create a sense of belonging for students. The Dean provides support to Senior Administrators and the Mental Health team and provides resources to help students reach their full potential during their high school years.

*Note: This district/school has two campuses. The primary responsibilities of this job would occur on a single campus of approximately 150 9th graders. The other administrators and counseling staff that comprise the leadership team would primarily assist with the other campus.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Student Oversight and Daily Management (Museum Campus): The Dean of Students plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, supportive, and productive school environment. They are responsible for daily hallway, locker room and lunch monitoring to ensure positive student interactions and smooth transitions between classes. The Dean will regularly visit classrooms to build relationships with students and staff, observe behaviors and learning needs, and collaborate with teachers to address potential challenges before they escalate. The Dean will assist with basic student discipline and administer policies as described in the HFA Student Handbook. They will be responsible for general correspondence and communication with parents regarding “low level” student behavior issues, and will work with the Vice Principal or Principal on major discipline issues.

    • Conflict Resolution and Student Support (Museum Campus): The Dean serves as a key resource in promoting a positive school climate by facilitating conflict resolution and restorative practices amongst students. They work collaboratively with the school's Conflict Coordinator to ensure implementation of effective restorative programs. The SCS supports Senior Administration and the Mental Health team by assisting with high-needs students and collaborating for effective implementation of student Behavior Intervention Plans. They actively contribute to a coordinated approach to success for all students, ensuring consistent communication and partnership among staff, students, and families.

    • Attendance Supports and Interventions (Museum Campus): The Dean of Students tracks student attendance for the freshman class, and works with school administration, the School Resource Officer, and parents/guardians to combat student truancy. The Dean problem solves and creates programs to foster regular attendance. They also assist with district reporting and County/State compliance responsibilities.

    • Other Duties as Assigned: As a member of a collaborative and student-centered school community, the Dean may be asked to perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the mission and vision of Henry Ford Academy. These duties may extend to the whole campus (Museum and Village) and will require occasional participation in after school/extracurricular activities and school events.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to Education, Human Development or Behavioral Sciences

    • Valid Michigan administration certificate or teaching certificate (preferred)

    • At least three years of teaching or professional school experience (preferred)

    • Ability to relate positively to students, parents, community and staff

    • Ability to manage groups and deal with sensitive topics and confidential information

    • Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

    • Disposition and skill set to advocate for all students

    • Computer literacy and relevant technology skills

    Work Environment, Conditions and Benefits:

The Dean of Students will spend most of their time in the Museum campus of the Henry Ford Academy—working primarily with 9th graders, interacting with students and staff, and maintaining a positive school atmosphere. The Dean will work with approximately 150 students annually at the Museum campus. However, the position requires the ability to travel back and forth between the two school campuses and to interact with/assist 10-12th grade students when necessary.

The duty period is 8:00am to 4:00pm during typical school days. The Dean will also be present from 4:00-5:00pm on scheduled school meetings days and must also be available for key afterschool activities (including conferences, honors/award nights, National Honors Society Induction, Commencement Ceremony, Prom/School Dances and similar key school events).

    Benefits include:

    • Health, dental and vision insurance

    • Retirement savings plan for public school staff (MPSERS)

    • Professional development opportunities

    • Paid time off and holidays

Salary for the Dean of Students is TBD/negotiable, based on education and relevant experience in education or school administration.
