    This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the primary work location will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location. For this position the primary work location is: 443 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul, MN.     This position will provide expert-level review of construction documents, systems manuals, quality control manuals, and field inspections for compliance with the Minnesota State Building Code and with specific expertise in the review and inspections of fire suppression sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems for industrialized and modular buildings, and prefabricated buildings. Review and inspections utilize state and federal statutes and rules. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Must possess a current State of Minnesota Building Official certification.

     

    Must possess certification as a NFPA Certified Fire Sprinkler Inspector or an ICC Fire Inspector 1 Certification.

    Four years' experience* working in the construction industry that includes:

    *A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Building Code Administration, or Building Technology may substitute for one year of experience; an Associate's degree in Construction Management, Building Code Administration, or Building Technology may substitute for six months of experience.

    + Experience performing inspections, technical consultation or on-site evaluation services for manufactured homes or prefabricated and/or modular buildings.

    + Knowledge of the phases of building construction in order to provide technical consultation or on-site evaluation services in areas of structural, electrical, plumbing and heating systems, building material properties, principles of engineering, building manufacturing procedures, operation of inspection or approval agencies, and objectives of quality control procedures.

    + Knowledge of the applicable state and federal statutes, codes, and rules as well as local governments and their relationships.

    + Analytical skills to review material for relevance, accuracy, correlation and completeness.

    + Skill using technology tools (laptop computer, tablet, smart phone) and associated software as necessary to record, complete and accurate inspection documents, access and interpret related database information, and complete other required agency documents or forms.

    + Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or common experiences.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Current Interstate Industrialized Building Commission certification (IIBC) for Plans Examiner or Building Inspector.

    • Experience as a plans examiner and an on-site building inspector

    • Experience with electronic plan review software systems and electronic permitting and database systems.

    • Current International Codes Council (ICC) certification and ability to acquire IBC certification within two years from date of hire.

    • Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).

    Physical Requirements

    The ability to ascend and descend ladders, traverse various types of terrain, and to move through various structures to inspect and assess code compliance. In addition, the ability move up to 50 pounds and drive extensively.
