    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    The Department of English at Lehman College, of the City University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenure-track/tenured Associate Professor position in African American and African Diaspora Literatures. The department also welcomes applicants with a secondary proficiency in Literatures of the Americas, Indigenous Literatures, Latino/Latina or Afro-Caribbean Literatures, or Creative Writing (Fiction). The appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor will begin Fall 2026.

     

    The responsibilities of this position include teaching a range of required and elective undergraduate service courses in English, as well as graduate courses for the M.A. program in English. The successful applicant may occasionally be asked to teach in the evenings and on the weekend.

     

    In addition to a strong commitment to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to have a record of publication and to demonstrate the potential to maintain an active research agenda. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in scholarship in the form of conference presentations, journal articles, and monographs and/or edited volumes and book chapters, and to provide service to the department, college, and university through advising, committee membership, and administrative assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track or tenured appointment and commensurate with rank.

     

    Professorial ranks at the City University of New York (CUNY) have an annual teaching load of 18 credit hours (5-6 courses) per year which may be taught in person or online, depending on the Department's needs. For tenure-track faculty, the teaching commitment is reduced by 18 credit hours over the first five years in order to assist with research. Tenured faculty may also receive teaching releases to assist with research. Additional funding is also available from Lehman College and CUNY through competitive grants for research, travel, and professional development.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Ph.D. in English or related field in hand by the appointment date (August 26th, 2026).

    COMPENSATION

    Assistant Professor salary: $90,838 - $102,017

     

    Associate Professor salary: $109,898 - $121,194

     

    Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.

     

    CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
