    Overview

     

    Love basketball and want to be part of the action? The City of Missoula Parks & Recreation is looking for skilled and confident Basketball Officials to help keep our leagues running smoothly and safely. If you have an eye for the game, strong judgment, and a passion for community recreation, this is your chance to make an impact on the court while mentoring others and promoting good sportsmanship.

     

    The position requires Knowledge of basic basketball rules, effective communication and teamwork with co-officials, and the ability to manage players, coaches, and spectators in a positive and professional manner.

     

    To Apply : All applicants must submit a City of Missoula application.

     

    Screening of applications will begin immediately. Applications will continue to be accepted until an adequate applicant pool has been established.

    *Youth League:Games are held Fridays from 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. The season begins January 9, 2026, and runs through February 27, 2026. Players range from 1st to 5th grade.

    *Adult League:Games are held on Sundays from 12 noon - 6:00 p.m. (depending on league registration). The season runs from January 11 through March 15, 2026.

    Essential Functions

    ALL POSITIONS

    + Officiate games, tournaments, and other sporting events to ensure compliance with league rules.

    + Judge performances in games to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.

    + Inspect and set up sports equipment and observe all participants to ensure safety.

    + Keep track of event times, starting or stopping play when necessary.

    + Signal participants or other officials when infractions occur or to regulate play or game.

    + Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess penalties when necessary, according to regulations.

    + Assist in emergency procedures.

    + Promote positive sportsmanship for participants and spectators.

    + Other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.

    RECREATION PROGRAM OFFICIAL III

    + Serve as primary Official on the field, including providing mentorship to other Officials, interacting with parents and coaches, and mitigating difficult calls.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in recreational and competitive sporting events.

    + Knowledge of rules and game play of specified sport, with the ability to interpret and apply City adapted rules and regulations.

    + Skill in promoting positive and safe environments.

    + Skill in relying on judgement to make split second decisions and rulings on infractions and penalties, with the ability to make proper calls on command.

    + Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

    + Ability to lead and work with both adults and youth of all ages.

    + Ability to effectively meet and communicate with the public and deescalate stressful situations.

    + Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.

    + Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

    + Ability to accept criticism and resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

    + Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.

    Working Conditions:

    + Positions require the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.

    + Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions.

     

    Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

    ALL POSITIONS

    + Any combination of training and experience with leading sports or recreation programs.

    + Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.

    + Officiating certification, preferred.

    + Adult CPR/First Aid certification, preferred.

    RECREATION PROGRAM OFFICIAL I

    + Must have one (1) year of officiating experience.

    RECREATION PROGRAM OFFICIAL II

    + Must have two (2) years of officiating experience.

    RECREATION PROGRAM OFFICIAL III

    + Must have three (3) years of officiating experience.
