    The incumbent of this position performs highly responsible administrative work in the District Office of Probation and Parole that consists of a professional staff and a clerical staff and the supervision, direction, guidance and coordination of professional level staff in the delivery of probation and parole services with criminal offenders under supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Four years of experience as a probation or parole officer, or in counseling, psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or administrative services plus one of the following:

    1. Three years of experience in corrections or law enforcement

    2. Three years of continuous active military duty (all Military Occupational Specialties apply)

    3. Six years of full-time experience in any field

    4. A bachelor's degree

    OR

    Three years of experience as a probation or parole officer, or in counseling, psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or administrative services plus a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, education, business administration, public administration, or a criminal justice field.

    EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

    Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

     

    Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

     

    This position requires the incumbent to handle and carry firearms.

     

    Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    Job Duties:

    + Directs and coordinates activities of P&P staff in the delivery of services entailing release, intensive probation supervision, intensive incarceration/intensive parole program, sheriff’s maintenance program, highly sensitive and complex criminal justice investigations for various decision makers in the Criminal Justice system including Judges, Board of Pardons and Parole, Governor’s Office and Interstate Compact, etc.

    + Formulates policies and procedures at the district level. Disseminates and interprets policies, procedures, and legislation affecting district office activities. Contributes input and information to the Division and Department in regard to the formulation of procedure and policy.

    + Maintains contact and collaborates with Sheriffs, Chiefs of Police, District Attorneys, Directors of treatment facilities and a variety of other officials and administrators, serving as liaison in the resolution of problems, coordination of services and development of mutual areas of support. Provides testimony before legislative committees when requested.

    + Delegates work assignments to include the assignment and distribution of caseloads, investigations, and special work assignments to district staff. This includes the development and monitoring of systems and procedures that ensure equitable distribution of work load and optimum use of resources.

    + Audits and reviews the work of the district staff. Holds regular staff meetings, conferences, etc., to discuss issues regarding new and changing policies, legislative changes, court decisions, etc.

    + Interviews, screens and approves hiring of all new district personnel. Interviews, screens and approves promotions of current district personnel.

    + Completes employee performance evaluations and counsels staff regarding performance problems.

    + Establishes employee work schedules. Reviews and approves leave requests. Reviews and approves time and attendance sheets for all employees.

    + Develops, directs, coordinates and delegates the orientation and training of personnel in the accomplishment of agency objectives.

    + Recommends disciplinary actions and serves as hearing officer for disciplinary hearings, employee grievances and citizen complaints.

    + Administers, coordinates, delegates and conducts activities relating to the violation process including the arrest and transportation of violators and the conducting of preliminary probable cause hearings.

    + Responsible for the determination of personnel, supply and equipment requirements of the District office through the direction of subordinate supervisors in the maintenance of statistical data, inventory control and the budgetary process. Assigns state vehicles and other equipment.

    + Responsible for speaking to civic groups, schools, governmental boards and commissions and other interested parties to explain the Division’s programs and objectives.

    + Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

    + Supervise P&P Officers, P&P Specialist, P&P Supervisors and Administrative Program Manager.

    Position-Specific Details:

    Appointment Type: Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

     

    + The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted, or may be required to accept a probational appointment.

     

    Compensation: This position is eligible for a Special Entrance Rate (SER)of $36.14 per hour.

     

    Note regarding the advertised pay range: The maximum amounts listed are the maximum salary amounts a person can make at each level over their career and NOTthe amount we are allowed to pay a new hire.

    + Any qualifying experience that is based on college credit/college hours should have an accompanying transcript for verification.
